China's top drug distributor Sinopharm says ex-VP detained
Sunday, Jan 12, 2014 07:54 PM PST
Sinopharm Group Co Ltd, China's largest pharmaceutical distributor, said its former vice president has been detained as part of a probe into alleged corruption, the latest industry official to come under scrutiny. Shi Jinming was detained on Friday by Shanghai authorities, while Xu Yizhong, a former general manager of a wholly owned subsidiary, was also under investigation, Sinopharm said in a statement late on Sunday. Sinopharm said the case had no material impact on its operations and it had set up a special committee to examine and review its internal control system. The most high-profile investigation involved British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline Plc, significantly denting the firm's China sales and spooking doctors more widely to reduce interaction with sales teams.

Water is distributed to residents at the South Charleston Community Center in CharlestonBy Ann Moore CHARLESTON, West Virginia (Reuters) - Restaurants and shops began reopening on Sunday in parts of West Virginia where the water supply was poisoned by a chemical spill, although up to 300,000 people spent a fourth day unable to use tap water for anything besides flushing toilets. State government officials, the utility company West Virginia American Water and the National Guard continued to test the water supply after as much as 7,500 gallons (28,000 liters) of an industrial chemical leaked into the Elk River on Thursday. It could still be several days before people in nine counties and Charleston, the state capital and largest city, can once again use the water from their faucets for drinking, cooking and bathing.

Breastfeed babies if you want, pope tells mothers in Sistine Chapel
Sunday, Jan 12, 2014 08:13 AM PST
Pope Francis baptises one of 32 babies during a mass in the Sistine Chapel at the VaticanBy Philip Pullella VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis baptized 32 babies in the Sistine Chapel on Sunday and told their mothers, including one who was married in a civil service rather than in church, to have no qualms about breast-feeding them there. Unlike his predecessors, who usually delivered long and theology-laden homilies at the yearly baptism event, the pope offered a brief, improvised homily of some 300 words centered on the children. Michelangelo's frescoes in the Sistine Chapel are some of the world's most celebrated works of art. But the pope told the mothers not to feel intimidated by the surroundings.

Obamacare may get sick if young Americans don't sign up
Sunday, Jan 12, 2014 05:14 AM PST
By Lewis Krauskopf NEW YORK (Reuters) - Now that more than 2 million people have signed up for private insurance plans created by President Barack Obama's healthcare law, a crucial next check-up for the new marketplace will be to see how old customers are. Early data from a handful of state exchanges shows the administration needs more young adults to sign up in the next three months to help offset costs from older enrollees and prevent insurers from raising their rates. Critics of Obama's Affordable Care Act say the market won't attract enough young people to keep it financially viable, putting more pressure on government funds to compensate for any insurer losses. Data from seven states and the District of Columbia, which are running their own marketplaces, show that of more than 200,000 enrollees, nearly 22 percent are 18 to 34 years old, according to a Reuters analysis.

Permit to hunt endangered rhino sells for $350,000 despite protests
Saturday, Jan 11, 2014 08:55 PM PST
A permit to hunt a black rhino in Namibia sold for $350,000 at an auction in Dallas on Saturday with proceeds going to protect the endangered animals despite protests from animal rights groups that saw the sale as immoral conservation. The Dallas Safari Club had been expecting the permit to bring $250,000 to $1 million at an auction held during its annual convention. "Biologists in Namibia were hopeful that a U.S.-based auction would produce a record amount for rhino conservation, and that's exactly what happened," said club Executive Director Ben Carter. "These bulls no longer contribute to the growth of the population and are in a lot of ways detrimental to the growth of the population because black rhinos are very aggressive and territorial.
