Deaf Seahawks fullback inspires others with Super Bowl run

By Larry Fine NEW YORK (Reuters) - Seattle Seahawks fullback Derrick Coleman has triumphed already, regardless of the outcome of Sunday's Super Bowl against the Denver Broncos. Coleman, the third deaf player to compete in the National Football League, has beaten the odds and his story has inspired the hearing impaired and others battling adversity around the globe. An ad he did for the Duracell batteries that power his hearing aids went viral on YouTube with more than 13 million views and led to his becoming a champion to the hearing impaired, especially among the young. That's basically what I'm doing." Coleman, who rates his ability to hear without his hearing aids as two on a scale to 10, always enjoyed playing sports as a boy and did not take up football until he was 13.

Head coach John Fox gave his players a solid 90-minute workout at the New York Jets training facility after they limbered up with a gentle walk-through on the synthetic field. Sunday's game will be played at night at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It will be the first time the Super Bowl has been played in an outdoor stadium in a cold weather state.

The five-times major champion had been in doubt with a back injury that prompted him to withdraw from last week's PGA Tour event at Torrey Pines in Southern California after two rounds. I expect to play and play well," Mickelson said in a statement ahead of the Jan 30-February 2 Phoenix Open. The event, part of the build-up to Sunday's National Football League championship game, gave football fans and the simply curious a chance to see players, try their luck at kicking a field goal in Manhattan's intense wind or ride a 60-foot-high (18-meter-high) toboggan run. Officials estimated that 1 million people would visit the , 13 blocks between 34th Street and 47th Street closed off to cars for attractions that also included a concert stage where performers such as Broadway star Michael Cavanaugh and Blondie are scheduled to perform nightly. "This exemplifies what New York is about, bringing all types of people together from around the world," New York City resident Angel Crawford said of the Broadway event.

While law enforcement officials said they were not aware of any specific threats targeting the February 2 National Football League championship in East Rutherford, New Jersey, attacks like those that killed 34 people in two days in Russia late last year are their biggest worry. As you know both of those bombings were targeting mass transit," Rick Fuentes, superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, told reporters.

A woman walks through Times Square which has been transformed into Super Bowl Boulevard ahead of Super Bowl XLVIII in New York(Reuters) - Those looking to hold a traditional crawfish boil for the Super Bowl may be seeing red due to a rare blast of cold in Louisiana that hit during harvest time for the popular crustaceans, causing shortages that will kick them off many game-day menus. Production has plummeted due to the frigid weather with some farmers seeing harvests drop by as much as 90 percent, said Stephen Minvielle, director of the Louisiana Crawfish Research and Promotion Board. Louisiana's production accounts for almost all of the crawfish in North America, and Super Bowl weekend is usually one of the peak consumption times in the United States, he said.

Lows of 22 Fahrenheit (minus 5 Celsius) forecast for Sunday's game, the first Super Bowl played outdoors in a cold-weather city, drove ticket prices as low as $1,309, said Meredith Owen, TicketCity.com Communication Director, but they have risen since then to an average of $1,609. Lower ticket prices drew renewed interest from residents of New York, Connecticut and New Jersey, who led visits to TiqIQ.com, a site that resells tickets to the public.
