Friday, Jan 31, 2014 06:14 PM PST
NFL Commissioner Goodell speaks during a news conference ahead of the Super Bowl, in New YorkBy Steve Keating NEW YORK (Reuters) - With gridiron's biggest game being staged on America's biggest stage, National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell used the spotlight on Friday to ponder some big plans. From the possibility of more games around the world to expanding the number of playoff teams and adding franchises, to courting more women and Hispanic fans, a relaxed Goodell laid out his blueprint for NFL's expansion during his annual pre-Super Bowl state of the league address. The Denver Broncos will take on the Seattle Seahawks in the first cold weather Super Bowl on Sunday at MetLife Stadium and Goodell joked that even the NFL could not control the weather as fluffy fake snow fell on the stage. But if nothing else, Mother Nature appears to be a Super Bowl fan with fears of a winter blizzard disrupting the NFL's showcase giving way to a promising forecast of chilly but clear conditions.

Friday, Jan 31, 2014 05:31 PM PST
(Reuters) - James Ward won 10 of the last 11 games to upset big-serving Sam Querrey 1-6 7-6 3-6 6-4 6-1 on Friday and give Britain a commanding 2-0 lead over the United States in their Davis Cup World Group first-round tie in San Diego. The 175th-ranked Ward sealed his stunning victory over the 49th-ranked Querrey in just over three hours after Wimbledon champion Andy Murray had crushed Donald Young, the replacement for the injured John Isner, 6-1 6-2 6-3 in the opening singles match at Petco Park. So I started to stand back a little bit further to give myself a little more time." Ward was delighted to have been brought in by Britain's Davis Cup captain Leon Smith as the number two player behind the sixth-ranked Murray. It's always a proud moment (playing Davis Cup), so when he decided to pick me, it was great news." WINNING TONE Murray had set the expected winning tone against Young in the first match, powering down seven aces and hitting 33 winners to seal victory in one hour 38 minutes against his 79th-ranked opponent.
