NBA: Portland Trail Blazers at Dallas Mavericks(Reuters) - Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki was named to his 12th All Star team on Thursday while Miami Heat forward Chris Bosh was selected for his ninth appearance at the NBA's mid-season clash in New Orleans on February 16. With no out and out centers in the starting lineups for this year's game, three specialist big men were among the players joining Nowitzki and Bosh on their respective team's benches. AC Milan have signed Morocco midfielder Adel Taarabt on loan from English championship (second division) club Queens Park Rangers until the end of the season, British media reported. "I'm very happy to be here and it's an honour to play for the strongest team in Italy," the 24-year-old told the Milan TV Channel after leaving Premier League side Fulham where he had also been on loan. "I already spoke to (Milan manager Clarence) Seedorf and he told me what he expects of me. I'm a player that likes to attack, score and dribble." Milan are having a poor season by their standards and are currently languishing in ninth place in the standings a massive 28 points behind Serie A leaders Juventus.

Mickelson watches his tee on the third hole during Abu Dhabi Golf championship(Reuters) - South Korean Yang Yong-eun birdied six of his last nine holes to surge into a share of the lead in the Phoenix Open first round while Phil Mickelson launched his title defense with a level-par 71 in Scottsdale, Arizona on Thursday. Yang, who became Asia's first male major winner with his victory at the 2009 PGA Championship where he overhauled Tiger Woods in the final round, mixed eight birdies with a lone bogey to fire a seven-under-par 64 in dazzling desert sunshine. The 42-year-old Korean, a double winner on the PGA Tour, took advantage of ideal scoring conditions at the TPC Scottsdale and signed off with a superb approach to three feet at the par-four last before he sank the birdie putt.

A seven-time All-Star, Young spent his first 13 years in the big leagues with the Texas Rangers. - - - Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz has backed off his desire for a new multiyear contract and now wants a one-year extension, according to WEEI.com.

Soccer-Brazil's laggard stadium risks being benched for World Cup

By Andrew Downie CURITIBA, Jan 30 - When Brazil chose 12 cities to host the 2014 World Cup, the one stadium everyone thought would be finished on time was the Arena da Baixada in Curitiba. Built in 1999, the arena was the most modern in Brazil. Its owners, the Atletico Paranaense club, were known for their fiscal prudence and good management. The Arena da Baixada is threatened with exclusion from the World Cup and has until Feb. 18 to convince FIFA it will be ready in June and local residents are in a state of shock.

Young replaces Isner for Davis Cup tie in San Diego

Donald Young of the United States plays a return to Kei Nishikori of Japan during their men's singles match at the Australian Open 2014 tennis tournament in Melbourne(Reuters) - Donald Young has replaced the injured John Isner for the United States and will face Wimbledon champion Andy Murray of Britain in Friday's opening match of the first-round Davis Cup tie in San Diego. U.S. captain Jim Courier announced the move while naming his squad during the Davis Cup draw conducted on Thursday. Isner, the American number one, has not competed since he retired from his first-round match at the Australian Open on January 14 because of an ankle injury first suffered at the Hopman Cup earlier this month. After Young has played Murray on the red clay surface at Petco Park, home of Major League Baseball's San Diego Padres, big-serving American Sam Querrey will take on Britain's James Ward in Friday's second singles match.
