The company said the move was a sign of renewed commitment to the market after a sales decline by its core VW brand, which continues to achieve low U.S. quality scores. "The Volkswagen brand is and remains at the heart of our product strategy here," CEO Martin Winterkorn told reporters in Detroit on the eve of the North American Auto Show. Full Story | Top |

Sexy performance meets 'green' ethic at Detroit auto show Sunday, Jan 12, 2014 06:33 PM PST By Paul Lienert DETROIT (Reuters) - To look over the roster of racy new and future vehicles at the 2014 North American International Auto Show here, the initial impression is that U.S., European and Asian automakers want to turn back the clock to a time when performance and speed trumped concerns about energy and the environment. So-called green cars — electric vehicles, hybrids and hydrogen fuel cells — are being heavily overshadowed at the Detroit show by sports cars, in a broad spectrum of sizes, shapes and price segments, from Ford Motor Co's redesigned 2015 Mustang to Kia Motors' zippy GT4 Stinger concept. Speed sells," said Michael Tracy, principal at Michigan-based consultancy the Agile Group. "People don't talk about wanting to buy a Camaro because the base V6 gets great mileage." A HINT OF GREEN In fact, there is more than a hint of green lurking in even the sexiest sports cars at this year's Detroit auto show, which opens for media members this week. Full Story | Top |

Exclusive: NFL seeks bids to boost ratings for Thursday night games Sunday, Jan 12, 2014 04:09 PM PST By Ronald Grover and Liana B. Baker LOS ANGELES/NEW YORK (Reuters) - The National Football League is asking television networks that currently televise its games to bid on a package of Thursday night matchups, a process that in the past has produced bidding wars for the hugely popular U.S. sport. Brian Rolapp, NFL Media's chief operating officer, confirmed that requests for proposal were sent to broadcast and cable companies, including the NFL's current partners. The NFL is seeking bids for as many as eight of the games currently telecast on the league-owned NFL Network in an effort to get higher ratings than those on its cable channel, according to two people with knowledge of the requests. Formal requests for proposal went out to Disney's ESPN cable network, which shows games on Monday night, and to Comcast's NBC network, CBS and to Twenty-First Century Fox's Fox network, all of which show regular season games, mostly on Sundays. In December, 1,340 new jobs were created in the City financial district, up by two thirds versus the same month in 2012, according to research by recruitment firm Astbury Marsden. Investment banks created 67 percent more jobs than in December 2012. Astbury Marsden said steady trading volumes encouraged City firms to continue to support growth in equity and derivatives trading and a buoyant shares listings market encouraged banks to devote more resources to deal-making and execution teams.
