Soccer-City's blockbuster squad boosted by Aguero return
Sunday, Jan 12, 2014 08:01 PM PST
Manchester City's top scorer Sergio Aguero is ready to make his return from injury against Cardiff City on Saturday and could even feature in the FA Cup replay against Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday, the Argentine said. Aguero has not played since limping off the field with a calf injury during the 6-3 victory over English Premier League title rivals Arsenal on Dec. 14. "I'll be fully recovered by the Cardiff game and depending on how the week's training goes I may be able to show up for a few minutes on the second leg against Blackburn for the FA Cup." Aguero has struck 13 goals in 15 league appearances this season and his injury was considered a big blow to the team's title hopes. However, Spain's Alvaro Negredo and Bosnian Edin Dzeko have stepped up with goals in his absence as City recorded seven wins in eight league and cup matches since to move top of the table.

Walker wins Sony Open with sizzling finish
Sunday, Jan 12, 2014 07:59 PM PST
Walker celebrates with Hara and Gosling after winning the final round of the Sony Open golf tournament at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu(Reuters) - American Jimmy Walker birdied four of the last six holes to storm clear of a crowded leaderboard and win his second PGA Tour title by one shot at the Sony Open in Hawaii on Sunday. The 34-year-old, who had trailed by two strokes overnight, produced ice-cool composure and superb play over the closing stretch as he fired a flawless seven-under-par 63 at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu. Six players held at least a share of the lead during a wildly fluctuating final round but the long-hitting Walker made his timely charge with birdies at the 13th, 15th, 16th and 17th to post a 17-under total of 263. Overnight leader Chris Kirk recovered from a slow start to close with a five-birdie 66 and secure outright second place, finishing a stroke in front of fellow American Jerry Kelly (65), the 2002 champion at Waialae.

Soccer-Sunderland hat-trick has Johnson eyeing World Cup berth
Sunday, Jan 12, 2014 07:24 PM PST
Sunderland winger Adam Johnson, who scored a hat-trick in his side's 4-1 English Premier League win at Fulham on Saturday, is optimistic his improving form can earn him a place in England's World Cup squad. Johnson has not played for England since starting the 2-1 friendly win over Italy in Switzerland in August 2012 despite a dearth of left-sided attacking players available to manager Roy Hodgson. With Arsenal winger Theo Walcott ruled out of the tournament in Brazil after suffering a serious knee injury in the FA Cup win over Tottenham Hotspur, Johnson's trio of goals in the relegation clash was a timely reminder of his talents.
