Protection-shy players run risk of developing skin cancer
Wednesday, Jan 15, 2014 08:13 PM PST
By Simon Cambers MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Slapping on the sun cream may be second nature to Australians but it seems some of the world's leading players are taking unnecessary risks by not wearing any protection against skin cancer at the opening grand slam of the year. Australian Open officials have been handing out sun cream and advising fans to cover up while play was suspended at Melbourne Park on Thursday due to the excessive heat, as temperatures passed 40 degrees Celsius for a third straight day. Defending men's champion Novak Djokovic took to Twitter to spread the message, saying "protect yourself people" but others, including world number one Rafael Nadal, have said they preferred not to use it at all. "Players (don't like) that it doesn't feel great on your skin and also when you're sweating it drips in your eyes," said Paul Annacone, the former coach of Roger Federer and Pete Sampras and now in charge of Sloane Stephens.

Heat stops play at Australian Open
Wednesday, Jan 15, 2014 07:35 PM PST
Kei Nishikori of Japan holds an ice pack to his face during his men's singles match against Dusan Lajovic of Serbia at the Australian Open 2014 tennis tournament in MelbourneBy Nick Mulvenney MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Play on the outer courts at Melbourne Park was called to a halt on day four of the Australian Open on Thursday with temperatures hitting 41 degrees Celsius (106 Fahrenheit) and still rising. Organizers, who had been slammed for forcing players to play on in searing temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday, enacted the third stage of their "Extreme Heat Policy" for the first time at about 1.50 pm local time. The exception would be on the Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena show courts, where play would resume after the retractable roofs were closed. With forecast highs of 44 degrees Celsius, a third straight day of suffocating heat at the year's first grand slam was guaranteed to keep the debate on whether play should continue rumbling on.

Soccer-Chelsea seek to end United's title defence
Wednesday, Jan 15, 2014 06:00 PM PST
By Toby Davis LONDON, Jan 16 (Reuters) - Riding the wave of a five-match winning streak, Chelsea face Manchester United on Sunday with a chance to reinforce their own Premier League credentials and read the last rites to their opponents' title defence. Jose Mourinho's battles with Manchester United in his first stint as manager were frequently billed as decisive skirmishes in the title race, but this encounter will lack that extra edge. Chelsea are in the slipstream of leaders Arsenal, who host Fulham on Saturday, and second-placed Manchester City, who entertain Cardiff City, but United are way off the pace.
