X-Ray Reveals Hundreds of Gold Needles in Woman's Knees
Tuesday, Jan 14, 2014 06:32 AM PST
Needles1When doctors examined an X-ray image of the knees of a woman experiencing severe joint pain, they found a gold mine: hundreds of tiny gold acupuncture needles left in her tissue. But when pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs didn't alleviate the pain in her knees and only caused stomach discomfort, she had turned to acupuncture, the doctors wrote last week in the New England Journal of Medicine. In the woman's acupuncture treatment, the needles, which were presumably made of gold, were intentionally left in her tissue for continued stimulation, according to the report. However, leaving the needles, or any objects, in the body may not be such a good idea, said Dr. Ali Guermazi, a professor of radiology at Boston University, who wasn't involved with the case.

Obama: Won't wait for legislation to advance 2014 priorities
Tuesday, Jan 14, 2014 12:38 PM PST
Obama meets Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy at the White House in WashingtonBy Jeff Mason WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said on Tuesday he would not wait for Congress to pass legislation to advance his policy priorities this year and said he was "getting close" to finishing a review of U.S. surveillance practices - to be unveiled on Friday. Obama, speaking to reporters during a cabinet meeting at the White House, foreshadowed his upcoming State of the Union address and what appeared to be a new messaging strategy by emphasizing his ability to take executive actions without approval from lawmakers. Obama began last year with high hopes of making progress on gun control, immigration reform, and other issues after giving an inaugural address that rallied his base and set an aggressive tone for his second term. His gun control efforts largely failed and an immigration reform bill passed in the Senate but stalled in the House of Representatives.

Doomsday Clock Set at 5 'Til Midnight
Tuesday, Jan 14, 2014 03:11 PM PST
Doomsday Clock Set at 5 'Til MidnightThe iconic Doomsday Clock remains poised at five minutes until midnight, the Science and Security Board of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists announced today (Jan. 14). The clock is no doomsday device — rather, it's a visual metaphor for the danger of a "civilization-threatening technological catastrophe." Every year, the board analyzes international threats, particularly nuclear arsenals and climate change, and decides where the minute hand on the Doomsday Clock should rest. The Doomsday Clock is the invention of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, a publication started by some of the researchers who worked on the atomic bomb. The wife of one of these researchers, Martyl Langsdorf, was a painter.

New Jersey's Christie in address again apologizes, looks ahead
Tuesday, Jan 14, 2014 03:24 PM PST
"Without a doubt, we will cooperate with all appropriate inquiries to ensure that this breach of trust does not happen again." Two sets of emails last week appeared to show that Christie's aides had orchestrated lane closures for several days last September on a stretch of highway leading to the George Washington Bridge, which spans the Hudson River between New Jersey and Manhattan, and then lied about it. Christie has denied any knowledge of the apparent orchestration to snarl traffic at the bridge as political payback against the Democratic mayor of the nearby city of Fort Lee, New Jersey, for his refusal to endorse Christie's gubernatorial bid. But the governor's speech mostly addressed the "Jersey Comeback," which Christie has long claimed has resulted in private sector jobs and secured public-private investment in the Garden State, and his cooperation with the Democrat-controlled state legislature. "No state in this country has shown more bipartisan cooperation and governance over the last four years than New Jersey and our people are proud of it.

Religious groups face increased hostility worldwide: report
Tuesday, Jan 14, 2014 07:07 AM PST
(Blank Headline Received)By Tom Heneghan, Religion Editor (Reuters) - Violence and discrimination against religious groups by governments and rival faiths have reached new highs in all regions of the world except the Americas, according to a new Pew Research Center report. Social hostility such as attacks on minority faiths or pressure to conform to certain norms was strong in one-third of the 198 countries and territories surveyed in 2012, especially in the Middle East and North Africa, it said on Tuesday. The Washington-based center, which is non-partisan and takes no policy position in its reports, gave no reason for the rises noted in hostility against Christians, Muslims, Jews and an "other" category including Sikhs, Bah'ais and atheists. Hindus, Buddhists and folk religions saw lower levels of hostility and little change in the past six years, according to the report's extensive data.

South Carolina lawmakers take aim at healthcare law
Tuesday, Jan 14, 2014 07:19 AM PST
Doctor Chiou debrides leg wound on patient Kirk in PeoriaBy Harriet McLeod CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Reuters) - South Carolina lawmakers say they have found a way to stop implementation of the U.S. Affordable Care Act in their state, an effort that could provide a template for other Republican-led legislatures looking to derail the federal program. The proposed measure would ban state agencies from helping carry out President Barack Obama's signature healthcare reform law and prevent federal money flowing through state coffers from being spent on it, said Republican state Senator Tom Davis. The legislation would give South Carolina oversight of insurance rates offered through its federal exchange and require healthcare navigators, which help people sign up for the healthcare benefits, to be licensed by the state, said Davis, who chairs the committee drafting the measure. "Even though the federal government may pass a law, and even though that law may be constitutional, that doesn't mean that the federal government can direct the state to spend state dollars to implement it," he said.

Grandmother Deserves To Know Her Secret Great-Granddaughter
Monday, Jan 13, 2014 09:00 PM PST
DEAR ABBY: My family has been keeping a secret from my grandmother. I have a 17-month-old daughter that she doesn't know exists. I wanted to tell my grandma from the start about her great-granddaughter (her first), but I am afraid to. My family thinks that telling her will cause too much stress on her. No one in the family takes my feelings into consideration. I think my grandmother should know she's a great-grandma. The problem is, I don't know how to tell her. She's 90 years old. I'm afraid if I say something now, it really might be too stressful for her. ...

Obama urges Congress to give Iran diplomacy a chance
Tuesday, Jan 14, 2014 03:28 AM PST
President Barack Obama urged the US Congress to give peace with Iran a chance Monday, as lawmakers lined up behind new sanctions despite warnings they could doom an interim nuclear deal. Obama said that the six-month pact due to go into force on January 20 after being concluded at the weekend, offered a "door of opportunity" for Iran to have better relations with the outside world, after decades of deep antagonism with the United States. But he said that if Iran fails to live up to the terms of the deal, which freezes aspects of its nuclear program in return for limited sanctions relief, he would support new punitive measures to stop Tehran getting a nuclear weapon. "My preference is for peace and diplomacy," Obama told reporters in the Oval Office.

Affordable housing for gay seniors opens in Pa.

Jerry Zeft, 70, speaks during an interview with The Associated Press at his new home in the John C. Anderson apartments, an affordable housing complex aimed at gay seniors, Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, in Philadelphia. It's one of the only such buildings in the nation, serving an untapped market that experts say will continue to grow as the population ages. Gay seniors often fear discrimination, disrespect or worse by health care workers and residents of traditional elder housing facilities, ultimately leading many back into the closet after years of being open. (AP Photo/Matt Rourke)PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jerry Zeft was so excited to move into his new apartment that he slept on an air mattress for nearly a week while he waited for his bed and other belongings to catch up with him.
