The geopolitical process that began centuries ago as the polar regions were explored continues today with countries as diverse as China, Russia, Ukraine, Britain, and Chile hovering to claim territory or resources. It is easy to view the increased presence of humans in the polar zones as a direct result of climate change, which has reduced the area and thickness of summer Arctic sea ice by half over the past 50 years, and continues to bleed 200 billion tons of ice from the Antarctic ice sheets each year. The island of Spitsbergen sits 500 miles north of Norway, devoid of trees, 60 percent of its land hidden beneath glacial ice hundreds of feet thick.

Frequently Naked Band to Perform at the First Cold-Weather Super BowlThe Red Hot Chili Peppers, who famously perform shirtless (and occassionally only in tubesocks), have been named to join Bruno Mars at the halftime show of this year's Super Bowl in New Jersey. It's the first time that the Super Bowl has been played in an open air stadium in a cold-weather location.   Last week, NFL commish Roger Goodell suggested that New Jersey was a unique venue and that this year's cold-weather bonanza might be a one-time deal: "Will we look at other Super Bowls in cold-weather sites? To this wintry mix, add four Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Running Back LeGarrette Blount gives the Partiots another weapon.With the specter of bad weather ready to invade the Meadowlands in three weeks yesterday's games in Seattle and Foxborough gave a hint at which team may be best equipped to handle the elements.  Rain and wind played a major role in the two Divisional round playoff games played.   Both saw the home team come out on top.
