Rugby-Former All Black Mehrtens joins Waratahs coaching team
Tuesday, Jan 28, 2014 08:08 PM PST
Former New Zealand international flyhalf Andrew Mehrtens has joined the New South Wales Waratahs coaching staff as a specialist kicking coach, the team said on Wednesday. The 40-year-old Mehrtens will work on a part-time basis with the team's kickers Kurtley Beale, Bernard Foley and Brendan McKibbin. An exciting running flyhalf, Mehrtens played 70 tests for the All Blacks and ended his career with 967 points, the most by a New Zealand player until Daniel Carter surpassed it on his way to becoming the highest points scorer in international rugby. "If I can do anything to help these guys achieve that, then great." Mehrtens, who won five Super Rugby titles with the Canterbury Crusaders, will link with former Canterbury and All Blacks team mate Daryl Gibson, who is the backs coach, at the Waratahs.

As Olympics loom, NBC leads in the race for prized viewers
Tuesday, Jan 28, 2014 06:26 PM PST
Pedestrians walk past an NBC logo outside Rockefeller Center in New YorkComcast Corp's NBC network, for years a ratings laggard, is ahead in a key contest among broadcasters even before it attracts millions of viewers this month to its marquee event, the Winter Olympics. "The Blacklist," which stars James Spader as a master criminal who helps the FBI, and the second-year drama "Chicago Fire" have pushed NBC into the lead among viewers 18 to 49, the group most prized by advertisers. NBC will begin its Olympics telecast on February 6 from Sochi, Russia, boosting ratings and giving the network its biggest opportunity this season to promote its regular primetime lineup. The network's overall ratings increased by 11 percent this season from a year earlier, to 9.2 million primetime viewers on average, according to the Nielsen ratings agency.

Stradivarius violin plucked from musician in Wisconsin robbery
Tuesday, Jan 28, 2014 05:14 PM PST
By Brendan O'Brien MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - A 300-year-old Stradivarius worth millions of dollars was stolen from a concert violinist by thieves who shot the musician with an electric stun gun just after he had performed with the instrument in suburban Milwaukee, police said on Tuesday. "It appears the violin was the primary target of this robbery," Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn told reporters, adding that the two thieves were seen fleeing the scene of the crime in a minivan. The so-called Lipinski Stradivarius, an instrument made in 1715 and distinguished by unique striations on its back, was stolen on Monday night at a college campus in Wauwatosa, immediately west of Milwaukee, Flynn said. The instrument was on loan to violinist Frank Almond of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra when it was taken from him following a performance, Flyn said.

Soccer-Arsenal midfielder Ramsey suffers injury setback
Tuesday, Jan 28, 2014 05:11 PM PST
Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has suffered a setback in his recovery from a thigh injury, manager Arsene Wenger told reporters after the Premier League leaders were held to a 2-2 draw at Southampton on Tuesday. "Aaron Ramsey is out for longer than we expected because he had a little setback in training yesterday (Monday). Hopefully he's not out too long but he won't be available for Sunday's game (at home to Crystal Palace)." Wales international Ramsey, whose eight league goals earlier this season helped Arsenal reach the top of the table, hobbled off with the injury in the 3-1 victory at West Ham United on Boxing Day. Arsenal must also cope without French midfielder Mathieu Flamini, who faces a four-match suspension having already been banned this season, after being shown a red card by referee Lee Mason for a two-footed tackle on Morgan Schneiderlin.

"It's a legacy, it's a group, it's a legion, it's a vast army of individuals and we have countless bodies behind us that are more than capable of doing the job," the voluble Sherman added about the defenders who have helped Seattle rank first in shutting down the pass game and limiting points. Denver Broncos defensive tackle Terrance Knighton helps a kid to try on a jacket as part of an activity with The Knights of Columbus called "Coats for Kids" in Jersey CityBy Julian Linden NEWARK, New Jersey (Reuters) - By any standard, Denver Broncos defensive tackle Terrance Knighton is a giant hulk of man with a delectable nickname. Had he been a seafood lover, he might just as easily been called a 'shrimp.' At Tuesday's media day, an annual event that kicks off of Super Bowl week, Knighton took a break from the usual dialogue about tackles and touchdowns to explain how he came about his unusual nickname. Plane is dark and the lady is walking down the isle saying, 'Pot roast, pot roast,' and I'm like 'right here, right here.' "My teammate behind me was like, 'You're saying that like that's your name. "It was either that or 'shrimp alfredo,' so I'm glad I got that." Knighton's tale elicited a hearty laugh from the large media throng that surrounded him at New Jersey's Prudential Center.

Jan 28 (The Sports Xchange) - You knew it was the obligatory madness of Super Bowl Media Day when Moritz Lang of Sky Germany stuck a microphone in the face of the beautiful dyed blond in the very revealing knit dress who, being a TV lady, had a microphone of her own. What this had to do with Richard Sherman trying to bat down passes thrown by Peyton Manning is unclear at the moment. The lady in the knit dress was one of more than 5,000 who were credentialed for Super Bowl XLVIII. Normally the event is held at the stadium, but as everyone is aware, this is the first outdoor Super Bowl in a cold-weather area.
