Ex-Fullerton police officers Manuel Ramos and Jay Cicinelli were found not guilty of all charges linked to the death of 37-year-old Kelly Thomas following a month-long trial, according to a spokeswoman for the Orange County District Attorney. The eight-woman, four-man jury deliberated for less than two days before returning the verdicts in a packed Santa Ana, California courtroom. Ramos, 39, was charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in the case.

Eric StevensonBy Nate Raymond NEW YORK (Reuters) - A New York state assemblyman was found guilty on Monday on charges he accepted $22,000 in bribes in exchange for official acts, including securing legislation favoring a network of adult day-care centers operated by four businessmen. A federal jury in Manhattan found New York State Assemblyman Eric Stevenson guilty of all four counts including conspiracy to engage in honest services fraud and bribery. The case was the latest to involve allegations of wrongdoing by members of New York's legislature in Albany, where at least 30 politicians have faced legal or ethics problems since 2000. "Graft and greed are intolerable in Albany, and we will go to trial as often as we have to until government in New York is cleaned up," Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement.

Los Angeles, the second-biggest U.S. city with a population of nearly 3.9 million, recorded 251 murders in 2013, down from 299 the year before, according to the mayor's office.

Two Britons arrested for alleged terror offences in Syria

The men, both aged 21 and from Birmingham, central England, were held after arriving back in Britain on a flight from Istanbul in Turkey, West Midlands Police said. They are believed to have travelled to Syria in May 2013, police said. British police have over the past three years arrested a number of people who have travelled to Syria over concerns that they are fighting with jihadi groups.

Ex-U.S. soldier who wanted to help al Shabaab sentenced to prison

A former U.S. soldier who admitted to trying to help the al Shabaab militant group, an al Qaeda affiliate in Somalia, was sentenced to seven years in prison on Monday, the Justice Department said. Craig Baxam, 24, of Laurel, Maryland, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Baltimore after pleading guilty to destroying records that might be used in a terrorism investigation, the Justice Department said in a statement. Baxam, who had been trained in intelligence and cryptology while in the Army, was arrested by Kenyan police in December 2011 as he tried to cross the border into Somalia to join al Shabaab.

Britain calls Syrian barrel bomb attacks a war crime

Britain on Monday accused Syria's government of committing "yet another war crime" by spraying civilian areas with barrel bombs - oil drums or cylinders which are packed with explosives and metal fragments and dropped from aircraft. Human rights groups say the improvised devices have killed hundreds of civilians in the civil war between President Bashar al-Assad's government and rebel forces. "The use of this deliberately indiscriminate weapon is yet another war crime, and is clearly designed to sow terror and weaken the will of the civilian population," Foreign Secretary William Hague told Britain's parliament. In December, Russia angered U.S. diplomats by blocking a U.N. Security Council resolution that would have condemned missile and barrel bomb attacks on civilians.

Why was crime on the rise in New York last year? Blame AppleData released over the weekend by the New York Police Department shows that grand larcenies within the city increased again in 2013, up 13% to roughly 45,000 incidents. There were plenty of contributing factors, of course, but the NYPD specifically pointed a finger at Apple while explaining why crime was on the rise last year. According to the city's police department, thefts of Apple devices like the iPhone and iPad made up more than 18% of all grand larcenies in New York City last year, with 8,465 incidents having been reported. Apple devices are stolen so often that the NYPD now specifically tracks thefts of Apple-branded devices separately from other devices. Pakistan lawmaker arrested for private dungeon, attack on police

The dungeon only came to light after private guards working for the lawmaker, Abdul Rehman Khetran, attacked police at a checkpoint on Sunday, beat them up and stole their weapons. The police then raided the lawmaker's fortified home in lawless Baluchistan province, freed the prisoners, including one woman, and arrested Khetran, his son and six private guards, said Barkhan district police chief Abdul Ghafoor Marri. His wife is also a lawmaker.
