| New Year on ice as weather stalls Antarctic air-sea rescue Monday, Dec 30, 2013 08:01 PM PST  Passengers on an icebound Russian research vessel are preparing to ring in the New Year in remote Antarctica after blizzards hampered a helicopter rescue planned when several icebreaking attempts failed. The MV Akademik Shokalskiy has been stranded 100 nautical miles east of the French base Dumont d'Urville for a week, hemmed in by impenetrable pack ice that three separate breakers have been unable to breach. The Australian government's supply ship Aurora Australis on Monday came within 10 nautical miles of the marooned vessel -- which has 74 research scientists, tourists and crew on board -- but was forced to turn back by snow showers and freezing winds. Russia's foreign ministry said a decision had been reached overnight to evacuate all 52 passengers by a helicopter on board the Chinese icebreaker Xue Long, which remains nearby after its own aborted bid to reach the Akademik Shokalskiy. | NY City greenhouse gas emissions drop 19 pct since 2005 Monday, Dec 30, 2013 03:56 PM PST  New York City's greenhouse gas emissions have dropped by 19 percent since 2005, outgoing Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Monday, putting the city nearly two-thirds of the way to meeting the goal that Bloomberg set five years ago. Bloomberg announced the progress report as he prepares to leave the mayor's office on Wednesday after 12 years in office. In the comprehensive climate change blueprint he launched in 2007, called PlaNYC 2030, Bloomberg set a goal to slash citywide emissions 30 percent by 2030 through a number of initiatives, such as requiring hybrid taxi cabs and retrofitting municipal buildings to make them more energy efficient. Sergej Mahnovski, director of the city's office of long-term planning and sustainability, said on Monday that New York's air is the cleanest it has been in 50 years and that the city is on track to make even deeper emissions cuts. | Florida's Mangrove Forests Expand with Climate Change Monday, Dec 30, 2013 12:03 PM PST  Fewer deep freezes, attributable to Earth's warming climate, have caused mangrove forests to expand northward in Florida over the past three decades, new research suggests. "Mangroves showed the largest increases in regions where cold snaps became less frequent over the past 30 years," study co-author Kyle Cavanaugh, an ecologist at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Maryland, wrote in an email. The findings, published today (Dec. 30) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggest that climate change could alter ecosystems even more dramatically in the years to come.
