'Wild natured' Suarez accused of diving by Mourinho
Sunday, Dec 29, 2013 08:08 PM PST
Liverpool's Suarez reacts during their English Premier League soccer match against Chelsea in London(Reuters) - Luis Suarez's "wild nature" was on display as he tried to win a penalty with an "acrobatic swimming pool jump" that deserved a yellow card for simulation, according to Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho. Chelsea had done well to stifle the Liverpool marksman before the flash point in the final stages of their absorbing 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge on Sunday that left Mourinho and Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers in firm disagreement. Trailing after goals by Eden Hazard and Samuel Eto'o following Martin Skrtel's early strike, Suarez set off after Chelsea fullback Cesar Azpilicueta only for Eto'o to block his run, leaving the Uruguayan on the floor appealing in vain to referee Howard Webb.

Sunday, Dec 29, 2013 07:47 PM PST
Deputy director Jean Marc Grenier talks to media outside the CHU Nord hospital in GrenobleRetired seven-times Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher was in 'critical' condition with head injuries after an off-piste skiing accident in the French Alps resort of Meribel, his agent said on Sunday. The 44-year-old German was in hospital in Grenoble and under the care of Professor Gerard Saillant, a brain and spinal injury expert who is also president of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) Institute. "He suffered head trauma with coma that needed prompt neurosurgical treatment," Schumacher's agent Sabine Kehm said in a statement late in the evening, which a hospital official read to reporters. Christophe Gernigon-Lecomte, the director of the Meribel ski resort where Schumacher has a vacation home, said earlier that the former champion was wearing a helmet when he fell and hit his head on a rock at around 11 a.m. local time (1000 GMT).

Schumacher an F1 great, if not the greatest
Sunday, Dec 29, 2013 07:47 PM PST
By Alan Baldwin LONDON (Reuters) - Michael Schumacher enjoyed more wins, more titles and more success than any driver in the history of Formula One but where he ranks in the pantheon of greats will be debated for decades to come. To his fervent fans the seven times world champion will always be simply the best - a giant whose fame transcends the sport and whose name is familiar even to those with scant passion for motor racing. 'Schumi', 'Schuey', 'The Red Baron', 'Der Weltmeister' (world champion): The German won an unprecedented 91 races and set record after record including five titles in a row with glamour team Ferrari between 2000 and 2004. In 2002, Schumacher finished every race on the podium and statistically, stands in a class of his own.

Authorities said the attacker detonated a shrapnel-filled bomb in front of a metal detector just inside the main entrance of the station in Volgograd, a busy hub north of the violence-plagued North Caucasus region on Russia's southern fringe. Islamist militants in the North Caucasus have carried out a long string of attacks since President Vladimir Putin came to power in 2000. They now confront him with his biggest security challenge, threatening to disrupt the Olympics that start in the Black Sea resort of Sochi in 40 days.
