The annual practice of letting these tax breaks expire is a symptom a divided, dysfunctional Congress that struggles to pass routine legislation, said Lewis, a senior Democrat on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee. Tuesday, Dec 31, 2013 01:38 PM PST
Applications are seen at a rally held by supporters of the Affordable Care Act in Jackson, MississippiBy Susan Cornwell WASHINGTON (Reuters) - More than 2.1 million people have enrolled in private health insurance plans through new federal and state websites since they were launched in October as part of President Barack Obama's healthcare overhaul, U.S. officials said on Tuesday. Sign-ups for what has become known as Obamacare gained pace during December as the website's performance improved, and as more Americans focused on getting coverage by the new year. Many of the newly insured under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act enrolled just ahead of a December 24 deadline to receive benefits on January 1, giving health insurers a tight framework to create accounts that can be accessed by doctors. About half the 2.1 million signed up for private health insurance on the federal website, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told reporters in a conference call.

All things good, bad and unpredictable converge Jan. 1 for President Barack Obama's health care overhaul as the law's major benefits take effect, along with an unpopular insurance mandate and a real risk of more nerve-wracking disruptions to coverage. For some, the changes bring big improvements, including Kraft. A painful spinal problem left him unable to work as a hotel bellman. Speaker Boehner ends rough year on a high note
Tuesday, Dec 31, 2013 09:29 AM PST
FILE - In this Sept. 3, 2013, file photo House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio listens as President Barack Obama speaks to media in the Cabinet Room of the White House in Washington. The ups and downs Boehner in 2013 dramatize the difficulties of managing a narrow Republican majority in the House. Some associates and observers say the low point of Boehner's year was almost a year ago, Jan. 3, 2013, the first day of the 113th Congress. With the Ohio Republican's family watching from the House gallery, a dozen defiant GOP lawmakers refused to back his bid to be re-elected speaker. The mini-rebellion fell short, but it delivered an embarrassing rebuke from conservatives. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster, File)WASHINGTON (AP) — It says a lot about House Speaker John Boehner's rough 2013 that even friends debate when the low point hit.

Tuesday, Dec 31, 2013 07:00 AM PST
This is the one reason Android users are actually jealous of iOS usersAndroid users are a proud group and are typically not fond of admitting that they're envious of iPhone users. However, there's one area where even the most diehard Android fan has to admit that iPhone users have it better: Software upgrades. AppleInsider notes that 78% of iOS users have now upgraded to iOS 7, an impressive feat for an update that was released less than four months ago. In contrast, the latest numbers released by Google show that only 55% of all Android users are using devices that run on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean or higher, even though Google first released Jelly Bean all the way back in the summer of 2012. What's more, Google says that just over 1%

Trapped ship passengers can't go overboard with New Year celebration
Tuesday, Dec 31, 2013 07:17 AM PST
By Lincoln Feast and Maggie Lu Yueyang SYDNEY (Reuters) - Passengers and crew aboard a Russian ship trapped for eight days in ice off Antarctica planned to ring in the New Year with dinner, drinks and song as they waited for a break in a blizzard to allow a Chinese helicopter to rescue them. The Akademik Shokalskiy, trapped since December 24 about 100 nautical miles east of a French Antarctic station, Dumont D'Urville, and about 1,500 nautical miles south of Tasmania, welcomes the New Year at 1100 GMT, two hours ahead of Sydney. It was not possible to contact the ship immediately thanks to patchy communications in one of the coldest and remotest places on Earth, but the plan was for passengers to congregate in the bar and sing a song about their adventure. "Tonight's celebrations have been tempered by the knowledge that we will definitely be getting helicoptered off, basically at the earliest opportunity, once the weather improves," Andrew Peacock, the expedition's doctor, said by satellite telephone.
