Bills no hit as losses pile up at home away from home
Sunday, Dec 01, 2013 07:14 PM PST
NFL: Atlanta Falcons at Buffalo BillsBy Steve Keating TORONTO (Reuters) - The Buffalo Bills made their annual trip to Toronto on Sunday but despite appearances by the Beach Boys and Toronto's infamous crack-smoking mayor, the NFL again failed to generate any buzz north of the border. A 34-31 overtime loss to the Atlanta Falcons added another line to a dismal record for the Bills at their home away from home. The yearly pilgrimage north has failed to live up to the hype in Toronto where the Bills are a miserable 1-5 in their domed home, their lone victory coming against the Washington Redskins in 2011. But for a small market franchise desperately trying to expand its fan base, the Toronto field trip is as much about dollars and cents as it is about wins and losses.

Cricket-Root or Bell to bat at three for England in Adelaide
Sunday, Dec 01, 2013 06:55 PM PST
Joe Root and Ian Bell are the two candidates to replace Jonathan Trott at number three in the England batting order for this week's second Ashes test in Adelaide, batting coach Graham Gooch said on Monday. Bell, playing in the middle order, was widely regarded as the difference between the two sides in England's 3-0 win at home in the first Ashes series of the year when he scored three centuries. Root opened the batting with his captain Alastair Cook against Australia in England before dropping down to number six for the Gabba test, where he scored two and a determined 26 not out in his two innings. "Whoever moves up to number three, and it's probably fair to say that Joe Root and Ian Bell are the two candidates, I'm sure they'll stand up for England, that's what they've got to do," Gooch told reporters at the Adelaide Oval.

Soccer-San Lorenzo fail to wrap up title, race goes down to wire
Sunday, Dec 01, 2013 06:18 PM PST
By Rex Gowar BUENOS AIRES, Dec 1 (Reuters) - San Lorenzo missed the chance to sew up the Argentine league title on Sunday after a 0-0 draw with Estudiantes sent the race down to the final round of games. With Lanus dropping points in a 2-2 draw at home to Boca Juniors, the Saints would have been crowned league champions for the 12th time, and first since 2007, with a win. Estudiantes hit the bar in the dying minutes of the first half and San Lorenzo were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty in the second but neither team could break the deadlock. San Lorenzo playmaker Juan Mercier told reporters: "The way we played, we weren't good enough to be champions." Coach Juan Antonio Pizzi said his team had to focus on their own performance and not worry what their title rivals were doing.
