Horse racing-Beholder shines, Smith piles up more wins
Friday, Nov 01, 2013 06:43 PM PDT
By Mark Lamport-Stokes ARCADIA, California, Nov 1 (Reuters) - The 2013 Breeders' Cup opened its $27 million two-day programme on Friday with a superb victory by Beholder, a disappointing run by the fancied Royal Delta and more record wins for veteran jockey Mike Smith. Beholder totally upstaged favourite Royal Delta in Friday's feature race, the $2 million Distaff, as the three-year-old filly took control by the final turn before charging down the home straight to win by four and one-quarter lengths. Close Hatches finished second with Authenticity third while Royal Delta, an overwhelming 7-5 favourite when she entered the starting gate, ended up fourth out of six runners after fading badly at a sun-drenched Santa Anita Park. No spark, man," said Hall of Fame jockey Smith, who had stretched his record career total of Breeders' Cup wins to 19 earlier in the day.

Vettel's finger salute gets up Prost's nose
Friday, Nov 01, 2013 05:09 PM PDT
Red Bull Formula One driver Vettel of Germany drives during the second practice session of the Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix at the Yas Marina circuit on Yas IslandBy Alan Baldwin ABU DHABI (Reuters) - Alain Prost has one particular piece of advice to offer Sebastian Vettel, as one four times Formula One world champion to another. It has nothing to do with driving, with the French 'Professor' recognizing Red Bull's 26-year-old ace needs little assistance in that department, and everything to do with how the German celebrates after winning. "If I see him I am going to give him the advice to stop celebrating with his finger," Prost told reporters with a grin at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where Vettel is chasing his seventh win in a row and 11th of the season. Vettel's raised single digit has become a trademark of the German's post-race victory celebrations and a particular annoyance for rivals and others who would rather see someone else win.

Big guns suffer as underdogs have their day
Friday, Nov 01, 2013 04:22 PM PDT
By Zoran Milosavljevic BELGRADE (Reuters) - Six-times Euroleague winners Panathinaikos were among the few big guns who could celebrate on Friday as some of their peers were stung by debutants and unheralded rivals in the third round of the preliminary group stage. The Greek champions were on the verge of defeat at Red Star Belgrade but fought back from a 15-point first-half deficit at a noisy Pionir Hall to win 90-86 in overtime as Nikos Pappas sank 24 points and forward Jonas Maciulis nailed two crucial three-pointers. French debutants Nanterre stunned former double winners Barcelona 71-67, Fenerbahce mauled six-times champions CSKA Moscow 86-60 and Germany's Bamberg edged Anadolu Efes Istanbul 88-86 to send shockwaves through the 24-team competition. Panathinaikos looked bound to suffer a similar fate after Red Star guard Charles Jenkins buried a pair of three-pointers to give the Serbian side a 62-48 lead in the final quarter but the Greek side came storming back to force overtime and ultimately silence the raucous 8,000 home crowd.
