| Hallmark Cards regrets taking word 'gay' off ornament Friday, Nov 01, 2013 05:32 PM PDT  By Kevin Murphy KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) - Hallmark Cards has apologized for changing a word in a well-known Christmas carol from "gay" to "fun" on a holiday ornament. The Kansas City-based company created an ornament for its Keepsake line depicting a miniature sweater bearing the words "Don we now our fun apparel," instead of the lyric "Don we now our gay apparel" from the Christmas carol "Deck the Halls." "We've been surprised at the wide range of reactions expressed about the change of lyrics on this ornament, and we're sorry to have caused so much concern," Hallmark said in a Twitter posting on its website on Thursday. "We never intend to offend or make political statements with our products, and in hindsight we realize we shouldn't have changed the lyrics on the ornament," it said. Full Story | Top |
| 14 cats, dog rescued from Princess Grace's childhood home Friday, Nov 01, 2013 08:41 AM PDT By Daniel Kelley PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - The once-stately childhood home of American actress Grace Kelly, who starred in the 1950s films "Rear Window" and "High Society" and later became Princess of Monaco, was raided this week after animal welfare officials saw evidence of animal abuse. Law enforcement officials from the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals seized 14 cats and one dog from the home occupied by an elderly woman in Philadelphia's East Falls neighborhood. Linda Torelli, a spokeswoman for the PSPCA, said the organization had been receiving numerous complaints about the home for at least a decade, but its occupant, 81-year-old Marjorie Bamont, had never opened her door to investigators. | Hundreds of cannabis workers fall ill in Albanian village Friday, Nov 01, 2013 07:10 AM PDT By Benet Koleka TIRANA (Reuters) - Doctors in Albania say hundreds of people have fallen ill from harvesting cannabis in a lawless region that for years has been out of bounds to police, Albanian media reported on Friday. "In the last two months about seven to eight people arrive in the emergency ward each day and many more have come earlier with disorders from hashish," Gjirokaster doctor Hysni Lluka told Top Channel television. Some 2,000 people, including poor Roma who have set up a camp near Lazarat, have been working for months in the cannabis fields, where producers pay eight euros per 10 kilos of processed drug. | China bans officials sending new year cards at public expense Friday, Nov 01, 2013 04:43 AM PDT China's ruling Communist Party on Friday banned officials from sending or printing new year cards or calendars if they have been paid for with public funds, the latest step in the government's crackdown on waste, extravagance and graft. "The printing and production are more and more extravagant, and the waste is greater and greater," the central government said on its main website (www.gov.cn). Chinese President Xi Jinping has sought to address growing public anger at the illegal or unethical behavior of party officials, especially those with flamboyant lifestyles, often seen as a sign they are corrupt.
