Britain plans tighter controls on betting machines Monday, Apr 07, 2014 07:52 PM PDT By Keith Weir LONDON (Reuters) - Britain plans to tighten controls on the high-stakes gambling machines whose numbers have grown rapidly in town centre betting shops in recent years, sparking a warning from the gaming industry that hundreds of jobs could be put at risk. But bookmakers said in a letter to Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday that changes to tax and regulation of the machines would cost the industry 350 million pounds a year and could put more than 2,000 betting shops out of business. In addition, the government now says it wants to make voluntary warnings introduced by bookmakers last month tougher and mandatory, hoping to guard against an increase in problem gambling. Shares in leading gaming companies William Hill and Ladbrokes were down 1 percent and 2 percent respectively by 1400 GMT, while the FTSE 100 index of leading shares was down 0.7 percent. United's cause not so hopeless after all Monday, Apr 07, 2014 07:15 PM PDT (Reuters) - Bayern Munich's longest winless run for three years and poor recent home record against English opposition have suddenly made Manchester United's task on Wednesday look a lot less daunting than it was when the draw was made. Bayern will also be without three key midfielders, including Bastian Schweinsteiger, for Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg, evenly poised after last week's 1-1 draw. The Bavarians have lost their air of invincibility since clinching the Bundesliga title against Hertha Berlin on March 25 and have not won since with two draws and a defeat in all competitions in their last three games. It is the first time since March 2011 that Bayern have endured a three-match winless run and, even though they have already sewn up the Bundesliga, it is a disconcerting statistic for a side which has become used to chalking up wins with monotonous regularity. Idle Rangers clinch playoff spot Monday, Apr 07, 2014 07:05 PM PDT (Reuters) - The New York Rangers clinched a NHL playoff spot without taking the ice on Monday, punching their ticket by virtue of New Jersey's 1-0 loss to Calgary. The idle Rangers, currently fifth in the Eastern Conference, have lost their last two games but gained some consolation in their return to the post-season. With just three regular season games remaining, New York (43-31-5) still have a chance to move further up the standings and earn home ice in the opening round of the playoffs. The Rangers are searching for their first Stanley Cup title since 1994. Full Story | Top |

Sherwood comes out fighting after job speculation Monday, Apr 07, 2014 04:04 PM PDT By Martyn Herman LONDON, April 7 (Reuters) - - Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood came out fighting on Monday as his side ended a day full of speculation about his future with a 5-1 crushing of Sunderland in the Premier League. All eyes were on the former Blackburn Rovers and Spurs midfielder after a Sky Sports report that he would be replaced at the end of the season dominated the pre-match talk. However, the 45-year-old did not look like a man about to be sacked as he went through his usual array of touchline theatrics, clearly revelling in a victory that just about keeps his side in the hunt for a top-four finish and Champions League football. "I'm the best manager this club has ever seen," the jocular Sherwood joked with reporters after being asked whether he was the best man for the job despite speculation linking Netherlands World Cup coach Louis van Gaal to the White Hart Lane hot seat. Walrus and son set for 'very, very cool' Masters Monday, Apr 07, 2014 03:45 PM PDT By Mark Lamport-Stokes AUGUSTA, Georgia (Reuters) - Craig Stadler is ready for "a very, very cool" experience at this week's Masters where he and his son Kevin will become the first father-son duo to compete together in the season's opening major. Kevin Stadler made it all possible when he won his maiden PGA Tour title at the Phoenix Open in February, and just in time with his father planning to make his final appearance at Augusta National in this year's edition. "I can't think of a better way to do it (make his Masters swansong) than playing with your son in the same tournament," former champion Craig Stadler told reporters at a rain-drenched Augusta National on Monday with his son sitting by his side. I haven't been here since it was built, I don't think." The elder Stadler, who won the 1982 Masters along with 12 other titles on the PGA Tour, has taken great satisfaction from watching his son develop into a champion golfer on the U.S. circuit. Brazil falling short in rush to overhaul World Cup airports Monday, Apr 07, 2014 03:37 PM PDT By Brad Haynes and Anthony Boadle SAO PAULO/BRASILIA (Reuters) - With less than 10 weeks until the start of the World Cup, work on crucial new airport terminals has fallen behind in most of the dozen Brazilian host cities, heightening the risk of overcrowding and confusion during the tournament. A temporary canvas terminal will be used instead of a planned airport expansion to receive fans in Fortaleza, which will host six matches including Brazil's game against Mexico. During President Dilma Rousseff's visit to an airport in Belo Horizonte, the site of a semi-final, officials admitted on Monday that construction would not be completed in time. "Other airports have not said anything yet, but they will probably have to come up with contingencies," said Carlos Ozores, a principal at aviation consultancy ICF International who has consulted for Brazilian airlines and airport operators.
