Wednesday, Apr 30, 2014 06:22 PM PDT
By Rex Gowar BUENOS AIRES, April 30 (Reuters) - Argentina's football association has voted to introduce a mammoth 30-team top flight from 2015 and return to a single championship each year, a move AFA president Julio Grondona says will bring a "calmer and more even" competition. Since 1991, Argentina has had two championships each season, and the current top division has 20 clubs. "All the directors (on the AFA committee) raised their hands to approve the change," added the 82-year-old, who has for some time wanted to include more teams from the provinces in a top flight generally dominated by the Buenos Aires clubs. Grondona took the top job at the AFA in 1979 and will retire in 2015.

Wednesday, Apr 30, 2014 04:39 PM PDT
Andrew Nisbet, 32, is accused of writing letters detailing the plot and meeting with an undercover prosecutor who posed as a hit man while Nisbet was in the Santa Rita Jail in the San Francisco suburb of Dublin. The Alameda County District Attorney's Office charged Nisbet on Tuesday with three counts of solicitation of murder, district attorney spokeswoman Teresa Drenick said in an email. A once-celebrated golf instructor, Nisbet faces 75 additional felony charges, including oral copulation with a minor and lewd acts on a child. He was arrested in December after being accused of molesting boys between the ages of 12 and 17 from 2009 to 2012 who were in his junior golf program in Livermore, an affluent city of about 80,000 on the eastern tip of the San Francisco Bay Area.

California Chrome draws post five for Kentucky Derby
Wednesday, Apr 30, 2014 04:24 PM PDT
(Reuters) - California Chrome was installed as the early short-priced favorite for Saturday's 140th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs after getting a perfect starting gate at Wednesday's post position draw. Trained by 77-year-old Art Sherman, California Chrome was already looming as the likely top pick after romping to victory in each of his three races this year. And jockey Victor Espinoza, who won the 2002 Kentucky Derby on War Emblem, said the post position was a good omen for his chances of winning a second "Run for the Roses" on Saturday. "I really don't go against him during the race and I think that's why he's running so great." Hoppertunity, which finished runner-up to California Chrome at the Santa Anita Derby on April 5, was installed as the second choice on the betting markets at odds of 6-1.

Soccer-Mourinho rues crucial minute after semi-final defeat
Wednesday, Apr 30, 2014 03:51 PM PDT
By Clare Lovell LONDON, April 30 (Reuters) - Chelsea's Champions League semi-final defeat by Atletico Madrid hinged on a pivotal second-half minute and the expertise of a young goalkeeper on loan from the Premier League club to the Spanish side, Jose Mourinho said on Wednesday. Atletico beat Chelsea 3-1 to set up a final against city rivals real Madrid after coming back from a goal down at Stamford Bridge. Atletico equalised just before halftime and Belgium goalkeeper Thibault Courtois, on loan from Chelsea, showed lightning reactions to keep out a John Terry header on the hour. Less than a minute later Chelsea striker Samuel Eto'o brought down Diego Costa in the area and the Atletico forward converted the subsequent penalty.

Soccer-Atletico's Courtois shines as he shuts out parent club Chelsea
Wednesday, Apr 30, 2014 03:50 PM PDT
There was one Chelsea player smiling after the club were knocked out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid on Wednesday - goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois who is on loan at the Spanish side. Courtois made a string of saves to help Atletico to a 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge that gives them a place in the final against city rivals Real Madrid, while also cementing his reputation as one of the world's best young goalkeepers. With the match finely balanced at 1-1, Courtois produced an instinctive stop to keep out a powerful header from Chelsea captain John Terry shortly after halftime. "I thought he was outstanding," said veteran Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, who at 41 is almost twice the age of the 21-year-old Courtois.

Soccer-Atletico have no fear of Real - Simeone
Wednesday, Apr 30, 2014 03:18 PM PDT
By Clare Lovell London, April 30 (Reuters) - Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone said his players relished the chance of meeting Real Madrid in the Champions League final next month even though they have less experience on the big stage than their powerful city rivals. Simeone, whose side beat Chelsea 3-1 with a commanding performance in the semi-final second leg at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, said he felt there was no advantage in playing a side his players know so well. "It's been a long time since we were in such a position so we are very happy and excited to be there." Real Madrid have won the European Cup nine times, while Atletico have had to be content the now defunct Cup Winners' Cup and two Europa League victories in 2010 and 2012. They showed no signs of feeling second string against Chelsea, however, and Simeone praised his players for their positive response to going a goal down through former Atletico forward Fermando Torres in the 36th minute.

Wednesday, Apr 30, 2014 02:31 PM PDT
* Atletico make final for first time since 1974 * Inspired fight back after Chelsea score first * Mourinho loses fourth successive semi-final (Adds details) By Mike Collett LONDON, April 30 (Reuters) - Atletico Madrid produced an inspired display of counter-attacking football to beat Chelsea 3-1 in the Champions League semi-final second leg on Wednesday and set up an all-Spanish final against city rivals Real. Goals from Adrian Lopez, a penalty from Diego Costa and the killer third from Arda Turan 18 minutes from time gave Atletico a 3-1 aggregate victory after last week's goalless draw in Madrid to send them into the final of Europe's elite competition for the first time since 1974. Chelsea took the lead after 36 minutes when former Atletico favourite Fernando Torres scored with a deflected shot, but the goal inspired the La Liga leaders who will now meet their neighbours in the first European final in any UEFA competition to feature two clubs from the same city in Lisbon on May 24.

Wednesday, Apr 30, 2014 02:19 PM PDT
(Reuters) - LeBron James, the face of the National Basketball Association, on Wednesday urged league owners to follow through on the lifetime ban imposed on Donald Sterling by forcing him to sell the Los Angeles Clippers. The Miami Heat forward and two-time reigning Most Valuable Player praised NBA Commissioner Adam Silver's decision to ban Sterling on Tuesday along with a $2.5 million fine in response to racist remarks made by the owner.
