| Soccer-Cardiff and Fulham hope two wins enough to avoid drop Sunday, Apr 27, 2014 09:09 PM PDT Time is running out for the survival-seeking Premier League strugglers Cardiff City and Fulham, but both believe six points from their remaining two games might still be enough to avoid the drop. Cardiff fell to the bottom of the table after suffering a 4-0 defeat at fellow strugglers Sunderland on Sunday, while Fulham threw away the chance to get out of the relegation zone when they let slip a 2-0 lead and could only draw at home to Hull City. Sunderland's victory allowed them to escape the relegation places and they sit in 17th on 32 points having played a game less than the current bottom three of Norwich City (32), Fulham (31) and Cardiff (30). Fulham next face a trip to 10th-placed Stoke City on Saturday before finishing their campaign at home to Crystal Palace, who are 11th. Full Story | Top |

| Soccer-Sunderland boss Poyet close to proving miracles can come true Sunday, Apr 27, 2014 07:58 PM PDT Sunderland manager Gus Poyet was left close to achieving a miracle after his side climbed out of the relegation places for the first time since February in the latest twist of "the most strange, incredible and unexpected season." Poyet's side thrashed fellow Premier League strugglers Cardiff City 4-0 at the Stadium of Light on Sunday to leave them in control of their own destiny with three games remaining and the Welsh side rooted to the bottom of the table. Sunderland now have 32 points, ahead of Norwich City on goal difference, with Fulham on 31 and Cardiff on 30 with the bottom trio all having played a game more than Poyet's team. Sunderland next face a trip to Manchester United before finishing with home games against West Bromwich Albion and Swansea City with six points required to stay up. Full Story | Top |

| Soccer-World-Ivory Coast colossus Toure fights for African pride Sunday, Apr 27, 2014 06:11 PM PDT Ivory Coast midfield colossus Yaya Toure has few obvious reasons to be unhappy - he is enormously successful, earns more than $350,000 a week at Manchester City and will soon play at the World Cup. Yet Toure says the fact he comes from Africa means he is not properly appreciated. Toure's uncompromising comments reflect a drive for success that took the powerfully built player to Belgium at the age of 18 and then in quick succession to teams in Ukraine, Greece and France before he signed for Barcelona in 2007. The 30-year-old (birthdate May 13, 1983) was part of the team that won the Spanish title in 2009 and beat Manchester United in the final of the Champions League, a match where he showed his flexibility by playing out of position at centre-back. | Soccer-World-Drogba farewell to overshadow Ivorian campaign Sunday, Apr 27, 2014 06:11 PM PDT By Mark Gleeson April 28 (Reuters) - Didier Drogba will make his final bow for Ivory Coast at a major tournament in Brazil but the west African country hope a new generation of strikers can drive them past the first round at the World Cup finals. The 36-year-old Drogba has been a talismanic figure for his country, leading them to the last two World Cups and five successive African Nations Cup finals, but he is in the twilight of his career after scoring 61 goals in 99 appearances. Drogba can no longer be assured of a berth in the starting line-up where the Ivorians can look to Wilfried Bony, Seydou Doumbia or Lacina Traore to lead the attack. Full Story | Top |

| Soccer-World-Colombia's hopes hinge on Falcao's recovery Sunday, Apr 27, 2014 06:09 PM PDT Colombia are going to their first World Cup since the golden generation of the 1990s reached three consecutive tournaments, although those achievements will always be overshadowed by the murder of defender Andres Escobar in 1994. After appearing in Italy in 1990, the United States in 1994 and France in 1998, Colombia failed to make the grade until they finished second in the South American qualifiers for this tournament. Coach Jose Pekerman's team, though, have a major worry in the build-up to Brazil after talismanic striker Radamel Falcao suffered a knee injury playing for Monaco in January. Colombia's chances hang on Falcao's recovery, said veteran Faryd Mondragon, now his country's second-choice goalkeeper. Full Story | Top |

| Soccer-World-Australia face damage limitation exercise in Brazil Sunday, Apr 27, 2014 06:07 PM PDT By Nick Mulvenney SYDNEY, April 28 (Reuters) - As the lowest-ranked team heading for Brazil, Australia's fourth trip to the World Cup finals was always going to be a challenge even before lady luck abandoned them in December's tournament draw. Spain and the Netherlands, who fought out the 2010 World Cup final, as well as South American powerhouse Chile, presented the worst scenario for a nation with a newly appointed coach and a squad in transition. Australia's sporting culture insists their teams fight against the odds to the bitter end, but it is difficult to see the Socceroos coming back from Brazil with anything much better than humiliation avoided. After scrapping their way through Asian qualifying under Holger Osieck, spiritless displays in successive 6-0 friendly defeats by Brazil and France led to the summary dismissal of the German last October.
