Putin Divulged His Plot to Reunify the USSR Years Ago
Monday, Apr 28, 2014 03:15 AM PDT
Russian President Vladimir Putin has never hidden his nostalgia for the days of the Soviet Union. He worked as a spy at the KGB, lamented the end of communism, restored lyrics chosen by former Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin to the Russian national anthem, and marshaled Soviet-style military parades in Moscow. The program, which began in the 1930s, would "pay homage to our national historical traditions," Putin said in March. His most direct praise of the old Soviet Union came in 2005, when he shocked the west in a speech to the Russian people.

U.S. actor Clooney smiles as he arrives on the red carpet for the premiere of "Gravity" at the 70th Venice Film Festival in VeniceA London law firm confirmed the worst-kept secret in show business on Monday by sending congratulations to one of its lawyers and Hollywood leading man George Clooney on their engagement. Media speculation that Clooney had gone back on his vow never to remarry grew at the weekend after his girlfriend, human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin, was spotted wearing a large ring on her wedding finger at a Los Angeles restaurant. The couple have said nothing and Clooney's representative declined to comment on the actor's personal life, but on Monday Alamuddin's law firm released a statement. "The barristers and staff of Doughty Street Chambers offer their best wishes and congratulations to Ms Amal Alamuddin, a member of Chambers, and Mr George Clooney on their engagement to be married," the firm said.

'X Factor' musical booted off stage at London's West End
Monday, Apr 28, 2014 03:14 AM PDT
Simon Cowell attends a panel for the television series "The X Factor" during the Fox portion of the Television Critics Association Summer press tour in Beverly HillsBy Michael Roddy LONDON (Reuters) - "X Factor" guru Simon Cowell has become the latest big name in showbusiness to suffer an expensive pratfall in London's West End with the announcement on Monday that the musical "I Can't Sing!" which he co-produced will close after a six-week run. The demise of the musical parody of the TV talent contest, which reportedly cost 6 million pounds ($10 million) to produce, comes hard on the heels of the closures of musicals by long-time West End and Broadway hotshots Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. "Stage Entertainment and Syco Entertainment, the producers of 'I Can't Sing!' at the London Palladium, have announced the closure of the production on Saturday 10th May 2014," the statement on the website said. "The show received a series of rave reviews and standing ovations from thousands of theatre-goers following its opening earlier this year." Despite reviews praising the show's irreverence, it struggled to fill one of the West End's largest theaters, and on some nights a hoarding outside advertised the availability of choice seats for only 20 pounds just before curtain time.

U.S. sanctions Putin allies as Ukraine violence goes on
Monday, Apr 28, 2014 04:49 PM PDT
Pro-Russian armed men hold their weapons in front of the seized town administration building in KostyantynivkaBy Maria Tsvetkova and Thomas Grove DONETSK/SLAVIANSK, Ukraine (Reuters) - The United States imposed new sanctions on allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, prompting Moscow to denounce "Cold War" tactics amid more violence in eastern Ukraine. The move to ban visas and freeze assets of the likes of Putin's friend Igor Sechin, head of oil giant Rosneft, also drew fire from President Barack Obama's domestic critics, who called it a "slap on the wrist." EU states added 15 more Russians and Ukrainians to their blacklist and will reveal them on Tuesday. The new round of U.S. sanctions, following those imposed last month when Russia annexed Crimea, barely registered in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Moscow rebels were holding a group of German and other OSCE military observers for a fourth day.

Two U.S. soldiers lose bid to dress according to religious custom
Monday, Apr 28, 2014 03:44 PM PDT
US army soldiers are seen marching in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in New YorkBy David Alexander WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Army has denied requests by two soldiers to dress and groom themselves according to their religious beliefs under a revised Pentagon policy, a spokesman said on Monday. It also could affect Wiccans and others who obtain tattoos for religious reasons. But the policy has been criticized by lawmakers and members of the affected religious groups, who say the Defense Department is still setting a hurdle essentially prohibiting some people from joining the service. Lieutenant Colonel Justin Platt, an Army spokesman, said only two soldiers had requested a waiver to the uniform policy for religious purposes since the new policy went into effect.

Search for missing Malaysia plane enters new phase
Sunday, Apr 27, 2014 11:39 PM PDT
A man walks past graffiti of the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 in Kuala LumpurBy Matt Siegel SYDNEY (Reuters) - The chance of finding floating debris from a missing Malaysia Airlines jetliner has become highly unlikely, and a new phase of the search will focus on a far larger area of the Indian Ocean floor, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said on Monday. The search effort for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, which vanished while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8 with 239 people on board, has so far failed to turn up any trace of wreckage from the plane. Malaysia, China, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Britain and the United States are assisting Australia in conducting the most expensive search in aviation history. Malaysia is under pressure to bring closure to the grieving families by finding wreckage to determine definitively what happened to the aircraft.

German neo-Nazis hold concerts, Hitler birthday bash in France

Neo-Nazis hold torches during a rally in Dresden, eastern Germany, on February 13, 2013Metz (France) (AFP) - German neo-Nazis, hamstrung by tough laws back home, are increasingly organising bashes across the French border, including a recent commemoration of Adolf Hitler's 125th birth anniversary. Facing intense media scrutiny in Germany and a slew of tough legislation, many neo-Nazis have turned to surrounding countries to stage concerts and other events, including France's northeastern border regions of Alsace and Lorraine. The area, which was under German control for about 40 years and only reverted back to France after World War I, was the venue of a recent ceremony to mark Hitler's birthday. Some 200 people crossed over the border for the party, held on the Saturday before Easter, in a communal hall in the Alsace town of Oltingue, which is near the border with Germany and Switzerland.

Russia condemns new U.S. sanctions, says U.S. back in Cold War
Monday, Apr 28, 2014 10:10 AM PDT
A senior Russian diplomat sharply criticized a new round of U.S. sanctions on Monday, saying the measures were illegitimate and uncivilized and that restrictions on high-tech exports from the United States marked a return to Cold War practices. "We decisively condemn the series of measures that has been announced in an attempt to put sanctions pressure on Moscow," Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said in comments posted on the ministry's website. He said the U.S. decision to impose sanctions was based on an "absolutely distorted" view of events occurring in Ukraine and "will not improve the chances for a constructive solution to the problems that have arisen." In addition to slapping visa bans and asset freezes on seven Russian officials and imposing sanctions on 17 companies with links to President Vladimir Putin, the United states said will deny export license applications for any high-technology items that could contribute to Russian military capabilities.

FILE - In this Nov. 2005 file photo, public information director Larry Greene is shown in the death chamber at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville, Ohio. Ohio prison officials said Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, they are keeping their primary lethal injection drug in place despite the state's supply expiring, but they've added a second drug option for executioners to address the shortage. Prisons spokeswoman JoEllen Smith said the powerful sedative pentobarbital will remain Ohio's primary method of administering the death penalty. A policy posted to the prisons department's website listed a combination of midazolam and hydromorphone as an alternative if sufficient pentobarbital isn't available or if the existing supply "is deemed unusable" by the medical team. (AP Photo/Kiichiro Sato, File)COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio said Monday it's boosting the dosages of its lethal injection drugs even as it stands by the January execution of an inmate who made unusual snorting and gasping sounds that led to a civil rights lawsuit by his family and calls for a moratorium.

Assad seeks re-election as Syrian civil war rages
Monday, Apr 28, 2014 09:39 AM PDT
In this photo taken on Sunday, April 20, 2014 and released by the Syrian official news agency SANA, Syrian President Bashar Assad, center, speaks with Syrian citizens during his visit to Ain al-Tineh village, near Damascus, Syria. Assad visited on Sunday a historic Christian village his forces recently captured from rebels, state media said, as the country's Greek Orthodox Patriarch vowed that Christians in the war-ravaged country "will not submit and yield" to extremists. The rebels, including fighters from the al-Qaida-affiliated Nusra Front, took Maaloula several times late last year. (AP Photo/SANA)By Dominic Evans BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad declared on Monday he would seek re-election in June, defying calls from his opponents to step aside and allow a political solution to the country's devastating civil war. Assad formally submitted his nomination to Syria's constitutional court to stand in an election which his Western and Arab foes have dismissed as a parody of democracy. He is the seventh person to put himself forward for Syria's first multi-candidate presidential vote in decades, but none of his rivals are expected to mount a serious challenge to 44 years of Assad family rule. "I ... Dr Bashar Hafez al Assad ... wish to nominate myself for the post of president of the republic, hoping that parliament will endorse it," it said.
