Despite his staggering achievements, Phelps and longtime coach Bob Bowman have always been coy about revealing their plans and nothing has changed.

A man is silhouetted as he makes his way past the main entrance of FIFA headquarters in ZurichFIFA may conclude its investigation into the voting procedure that resulted in the 2022 World Cup being awarded to Qatar before this year's finals starts in June, secretary general Jerome Valcke said on Friday. "An investigation is being run by (New York lawyer) Michael Garcia and the commission is interviewing all those involved in the case and it will soon be delivered to the (FIFA) ethics committee that is going to decide if any measures should be taken," Valcke told reporters. "That will be soon, maybe we will have a decision before the 2014 World Cup," he said after a four-day trip to Brazil. Football players are first college athletes to vote on union
Friday, Apr 25, 2014 02:58 PM PDT
Officials from the National Labor Relations Board leave the Northwestern University campus after football players voted to determine if athletes want to form a union in EvanstonBy Michael Hirtzer and Amanda Becker CHICAGO/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Football players at Northwestern University on Friday became the first U.S. student athletes to cast ballots in an election to decide whether to unionize. The vote, which has the potential to upend college sports, was supervised by the U.S. National Labor Relations Board in a university building near the football field on the Evanston, Illinois, campus. The NLRB is impounding the ballots cast by the players, who voted before and after workouts on a sunny, windy Friday morning, with small groups of four or five players wearing their Wildcats purple practice jerseys voting. Northwestern has requested the NLRB review whether the 76 scholarship football players who were eligible to vote have the right to unionize in the same way that private-sector U.S. employees do.

Florida legislators seek changes to U.S. baseball draft for Cubans
Friday, Apr 25, 2014 02:25 PM PDT
MLB: Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles DodgersBy Bill Cotterell TALLAHASSEE, Florida (Reuters) - Florida state legislators voted on Friday to pressure Major League Baseball into changing its rules so players in Cuba will be in a better bargaining position when dealing with professional teams in the United States. The state House of Representatives voted 93-16 for an economic development bill that provides $12 million in tax breaks for professional sports franchises expanding or renovating their facilities in Florida. An amendment was inserted requiring Major League Baseball to allow Cuban players to bargain with teams as free agents, rather than competing in the amateur draft. If they come directly to the United States, they are then subject to the amateur draft.

Turkey, Switzerland, France end Euro 2020 bids
Friday, Apr 25, 2014 02:16 PM PDT
By Ken Ferris LONDON (Reuters) - Turkey, Switzerland and France have pulled out of the race to host matches at Euro 2020, which will be held in 13 venues around the continent, their soccer federations said on Friday. Istanbul was among the favorites to stage the final and semi-finals but Turkey withdrew because it wanted to host the whole tournament rather than sharing it with other cities and would bid for the Euro 2024 finals instead. In a radical departure from traditional formats, European soccer's governing body UEFA has decided to spread the 2020 tournament around its member associations to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the European Championship. Friday was the deadline for countries to hand in their bid dossiers to UEFA, with the venues to be chosen in September.

Martin continues to set pace with 67 at Zurich Classic
Friday, Apr 25, 2014 01:38 PM PDT
(Reuters) - Ben Martin showed that his sizzling start was no fluke as he continued to set the pace during the second round at the $6.8 million Zurich Classic of New Orleans on Friday. Martin could not match his opening 62, but a five-under-par 67 was a most respectable encore in ideal morning conditions at TPC Louisiana. He threatened to run away from the field when he started the second round by picking up four strokes in his first four holes, but it was not to be. "I got off to a great start today, which I think is big," the South Carolina native told Golf Channel after posting a 15-under 129 halfway total, four strokes better than South Korean Noh Seung-yul with half the field back in the clubhouse.
