| Soccer-Sweden must end hooligan threat: former police chief Wednesday, Apr 02, 2014 05:42 PM PDT By Philip O'Connor STOCKHOLM, April 3 (Reuters) - Football violence in Sweden could drive sponsors away from the game and threatens the sport's long-term future, the country's former national anti-hooliganism coordinator has told Reuters following the death of a fan at the weekend. The death of father of four Stefan Isaksson has thrust the hooligan problem back into the spotlight in Sweden. Bjorn Eriksson, who published the findings of a two-year investigation into sports-related violence, making dozens of recommendations, said it had only been a matter of time before someone died. Soccer violence has hit the headlines several times in recent years, with a slew of matches disrupted and abandoned by fans throwing fireworks and other objects at players and officials, and organised fights between hooligan "firms" taking place away from grounds. | U.S. lawmaker wants Russia World Cup red card despite FIFA snub Wednesday, Apr 02, 2014 05:41 PM PDT A U.S. senator said on Wednesday that world soccer's governing body FIFA was wrong when it refused to kick Russia out of this year's World Cup and bar it from hosting the tournament in 2018 over its occupation of Crimea. "FIFA suggests that outrageous misbehavior by member states does not matter because such decisions are irrelevant to soccer," U.S. Senator Dan Coats said. In a letter to Coats and another Republican senator, Mark Kirk, FIFA said World Cup participation is based on sporting merit, and that only a violation of FIFA statutes and regulations could lead to suspension or expulsion from a competition. Coats noted that Yugoslavia was banned from international competition in 1992 and 1994 because of its behavior during the Balkan wars, a matter unconnected to the playing field. Full Story | Top |

| Soccer-Real back after Dortmund win, says Ancelotti Wednesday, Apr 02, 2014 03:48 PM PDT By Iain Rogers MADRID, April 2 (Reuters) - Real Madrid's 3-0 drubbing of Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League has put them back on track after two defeats in La Liga which severely dented their Spanish title chances, coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Wednesday. Goals from Gareth Bale, Isco and a record-equalling 14th for Cristiano Ronaldo in this season's competition virtually guaranteed Real a place in the last four ahead of Tuesday's quarter-final, second leg in Germany and should restore confidence after domestic losses to Barcelona and Sevilla. Real have slipped behind leaders Atletico Madrid and Barca into third in the standings with seven games left but are still in with a chance of completing a rare treble as they are through to the King's Cup final against Barca on April 16. "The reaction was good after the two defeats, although it's clear that we have not forgotten them completely because we paid a heavy price," Ancelotti told a news conference. Full Story | Top |
| Soccer-Pastore adds finishing touch to PSG victory Wednesday, Apr 02, 2014 03:43 PM PDT By Julien Pretot PARIS, April 2 (Reuters) - Playmaker Javier Pastore chose an opportune moment to remind Paris St Germain coach Laurent Blanc of his mercurial talents when the Argentine came off the bench late on to score a superb Champions League goal on Wednesday. His brilliant individual stoppage time strike following a mazy run inside the penalty area sealed a 3-1 first leg win over Chelsea to leave the French side in a strong position for next week's quarter-final return at Stamford Bridge. "Even he looked surprised when I asked him to come off the bench." PSG had regained the lead with David Luiz's own goal in the 61st minute after Eden Hazard had cancelled out Ezequiel Lavezzi's opener in the first half. He danced around four Chelsea players before beating Petr Cech with a low hard shot at his near post. Full Story | Top |
| Soccer-PSG sweat on Ibrahimovic fitness Wednesday, Apr 02, 2014 03:32 PM PDT PARIS, April 2 (Reuters) - Paris St Germain are sweating over Zlatan Ibrahimovic's fitness ahead of Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final return leg at Chelsea after the Sweden striker picked up a thigh injury on Wednesday. Talisman Ibrahimovic, who failed to sparkle as PSG won the first leg 3-1 at the Parc des Princes, was substituted after 69 minutes holding his right thigh. "It's a muscular problem," PSG coach Laurent Blanc told a news conference, adding that Ibrahimovic would undergo medical checks on Thursday. "He wanted to continue to play but it was not reasonable. ... Full Story | Top |
| Soccer-Dortmund's Klopp rues missed chances after Real drubbing Wednesday, Apr 02, 2014 03:26 PM PDT By Iain Rogers MADRID, April 2 (Reuters) - Borussia Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp was left rueing mistakes and missed chances as he dismissed suggestions his team had been outplayed in Wednesday's 3-0 Champions League reverse at Real Madrid. Dortmund were punished by Gareth Bale's third-minute opener after leaving too much space between the lines, Klopp complained at a news conference after the quarter-final, first leg at the Bernabeu. They gifted Real their second and third goals, scored by Isco and Cristiano Ronaldo, after needlessly surrendering possession. The Dortmund coach refused to concede defeat ahead of Tuesday's return match in Germany but admitted Real, chasing a record-extending 10th European title, were very likely to claim a berth in the last four for a fourth straight season.
