High winds could ground giant balloons in NYC Thanksgiving parade Wednesday, Nov 27, 2013 07:24 AM PST Snoopy, SpongeBob Squarepants and other giant helium balloons in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York could be grounded by high winds predicted for the holiday by weather forecasters on Wednesday. The 16 inflatable characters in question could lose their flying privileges based on city regulations that keep them out of the sky when sustained winds top 23 miles per hour (37 km per hour), and gusts exceed 34 mph. That decision will be made early Thursday by parade officials in consultation with the New York City Police Department. The National Weather Service on Wednesday predicted that Thanksgiving Day on Thursday in New York City will be sunny and breezy, with winds up to 24 mph and gusts as high as 40 mph. PennDOT Travel Advisory Wednesday, Nov 27, 2013 06:12 AM PST With snow in Pittsburgh and heavy rain here in Eastern Pennsylvania PennDOT is reminding motorists to be prepared before hitting the road this week and weekend. The following advisory is from PennDOT: Harrisburg – With winter weather affecting much of Pennsylvania and the Thanksgiving travel period under way, PennDOT today urged motorists to use caution and allow extra time to reach their destinations. "The Thanksgiving travel period tends to bring the highest volume of traffic to our roadways and, unfortunately, it has the highest number of crashes compared to other holidays as well," PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch said. "Drivers should build extra travel time into their schedules, especially with varying winter weather across the state." With weather forecasts ranging from heavy rains to significant snowfalls, motorists will encounter different driving conditions, and PennDOT will handle each precipitation type differently. An impending nor'easter and other mishaps are threatening to derail a bunch of travel itineraries. Flights at LaGuardia Airport in New York City were delayed an average of 50 minutes on Tuesday evening. The National Weather Service's lead forecaster told Reuters, "We've got everything with this - real heavy rains, (at) the lower elevations a band of freezing rain, heavy snows and then behind it, wind."
