Martin Bashir's Crude Emissions on Palin
Wednesday, Nov 27, 2013 12:00 AM PST
Like most MSNBC hosts, Martin Bashir has been hypersensitive to slights aimed at President Barack Obama, real or imagined. When then-Rep. Joe Walsh decided to skip an Obama jobs speech before Congress in the fall of 2011, Bashir was shocked. These demands on Obama's behalf make Bashir's astonishing disrespect of Sarah Palin all the more glaring. Even liberals are still lamenting how Bashir lectured on Nov. 15 that Sarah Palin's face should be urinated and defecated on.

Why the Iran Deal Is America’s Diplomatic Disaster
Wednesday, Nov 27, 2013 02:15 AM PST
Why the Iran Deal Is America's Diplomatic DisasterObama's nuclear deal with Iran is a strategic disaster.  In a single stroke, the US has shattered the European coalition it took a decade to assemble and made a multilateral US-Iran conflict bilateral again, greatly weakening America's strategic position in the Middle East.   First, the details: the United States will ease certain trade sanctions and unfreeze foreign currency accounts held by Iran in exchange for Tehran's halting or reversing its nuclear activities. The biggest issue: Iran is still allowed (it believes) to enrich uranium.  This lets Tehran increase its technical nuclear expertise, the major impediment to creating a nuclear weapon.

More Delays Plague Obamacare’s Rollout
Wednesday, Nov 27, 2013 01:14 PM PST
More Delays Plague Obamacare's RolloutThe Obama administration on Wednesday announced yet another major delay in the implementation of its problem-plagued health insurance website, this time postponing for a year a sign-up feature for small businesses. This comes just days before the White House's self-imposed Nov. 30 deadline for eliminating many of the technical problems that have paralyzed HealthCare.gov. The website's Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) enrollment application, which was created to make it easier for small businesses with fewer than 50 employees to sign up for health coverage through the federal exchange, will not be ready until next November, the White House said Wednesday. In the meantime, administration officials are instructing small businesses to bypass the website to apply for coverage by using paper applications or enrolling through brokers or directly through insurers.

Even if website works, Obamacare could see trouble ahead
Wednesday, Nov 27, 2013 01:22 PM PST
A busy screen is shown on the laptop of a Certified Application Counselor as he attempted to enroll an interested person for Affordable Care Act insurance in MiamiBy David Morgan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Obama administration says it is on target to make its problematic health insurance website work smoothly for the "vast majority" of users by this weekend, but some Americans who want coverage by January 1 may not be able to get it - even if they successfully navigate the portal and sign up for a plan. The problem, according to insurance industry officials and other specialists, is that the administration is behind schedule in building a computer program needed to help insurers verify the names, insurance plan choices and other details of those who sign up for health coverage under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare. The computer program - which administration officials acknowledge will not be finished until sometime next year - is among several crucial pieces of administrative technology the government is devising to serve new online healthcare marketplaces that allow people to purchase subsidized private health insurance or join the Medicaid program for the poor in all 50 states.

China says it monitored defiant US bomber flights
Wednesday, Nov 27, 2013 12:22 PM PST
FILE - In this Sept. 2012 photo, the tiny islands in the East China Sea, called Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese are seen. China said Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013 it had monitored two unarmed U.S. bombers that flew over the East China Sea in defiance of Beijing's declaration it was exercising greater military control over the area. Tuesday's flight of the B-52 bombers underscored U.S. assertions that it will not comply with Chinese demands that aircraft flying through its newly declared maritime air defense zone identify themselves and accept Chinese instructions. (AP Photo/Kyodo News, File) JAPAN OUT, MANDATORY CREDITBEIJING (AP) — China acknowledged Wednesday it let two American B-52 bombers fly unhindered through its newly declared air defense zone in the East China Sea despite its earlier threat to take defensive measures against unidentified foreign aircraft.

US presses 'concerns' over Chinese air zone
Wednesday, Nov 27, 2013 12:58 PM PST
Two American B-52 bombers have flown over a disputed area of the East China Sea without informing Beijing, challenging China's claims to an expanded air defense zoneThe United States on Wednesday pressed its concerns over China's newly declared air defense zone, a day after American B-52s flew over the disputed area in the East China Sea. Vice President Joe Biden will confront the Chinese leadership about the controversial issue during a pre-planned trip to Beijing next week, senior administration officials said. "Clearly, the visit to China creates an opportunity for the vice president to discuss directly with policymakers in Beijing this issue, to convey our concerns directly and to seek clarity regarding the Chinese intentions in making this move at this time," one official told reporters. "It also allows the vice president ... to make the broader point that there's an emerging pattern of behavior by China that is unsettling to China's own neighbors and raising questions about how China operates in international space and how China deals with areas of disagreement with its neighbors."

Captain America shield tops US danger toy list
Wednesday, Nov 27, 2013 09:15 AM PST
A toy Captain America shield is displayed at right during a news conference in Washington, Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, together with others considered dangerous toys, according to U.S. Public Interest Research Group's 28th annual Trouble in Toyland report. Several toys with high lead levels or toys that could cause young children to choke were found at major retailers and discount stores in the last few months, the U.S. Public Interest Research Group said Tuesday. The consumer safety group analyzed 50 toys for its annual report. Violations were found in just under a dozen, including a Captain America toy shield and play jewelry. (AP Photo/Manuel Balce Ceneta)Consumer activists cited a Captain America shield that contains 29 times more lead than allowed by law as one of the most dangerous toys of 2013. Tougher laws mean toys sold in the United States today are safer than ever, said the US Public Interest Research Group (US PIRG) as it released its 28th annual "Trouble in Toyland" survey of toy safety. "We need to protect our littlest consumers from dangerous toys," Jenny Levin, US PIRG's public health advocate, told reporters in Washington behind a tableful of some of this season's most dangerous toys. A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pencil case tested for high levels of cadmium and phthalates, both considered "chronic health hazards" for children, said the report, posted on the US PIRG website (www.uspirg.org).

Advocates are frustrated with the failure of House Republicans to tackle immigration. Increasingly, they're focus is on President Barack Obama. The outside groups are demanding that Obama use his powers as chief executive to stop deportations or provide some relief to many of the 11 million immigrants living here illegally. Analysis: Israel struggling to win friends, influence people
Wednesday, Nov 27, 2013 06:06 AM PST
Israel's PM Netanyahu leaves after delivering a statement at his office in JerusalemBy Crispian Balmer JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Criticized for settling occupied land and stung by its failure to shape the new world power deal with Iran, Israel must rethink its strategy if it wants to avoid severe diplomatic setbacks in the coming months. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's fury about the Iranian nuclear accord has exposed Israel's limited reach on the international stage and has coincided with growing frustration abroad over its flailing peace talks with the Palestinians. Traditionally the closest of friends, Israel and the United States now stare at each other with barely concealed mistrust. Some of Netanyahu's allies suggest it is time for Israel to build up relations in other regions, such as Asia, to make sure that all its diplomatic eggs are not in one, American, basket.

Turkeys avoid Thanksgiving fate with U.S. presidential pardon
Wednesday, Nov 27, 2013 12:42 PM PST
By Mark Felsenthal WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Taking a break from weighty matters of state and pitched battles with political foes, President Barack Obama exercised the lighter side of his authority Wednesday by sparing two magnificent turkeys the fate of becoming someone's Thanksgiving dinner. "This is not one of them." The pardoning event, an annual ritual, took place under the awning of the White House's North Portico as a small crowd squeezed together to escape a pelting rain, providing material for wags in Washington. Obama, who has said his ability to get elected to the White House despite his Kenyan family last name is a testament to America's tolerance and diversity, displayed a politician's appreciation for both the winner and loser of the contest. "He is sticking around and he's already busy raising money for his next campaign." Americans have been sending presidents turkeys for Thanksgiving since the 19th century, the White House said.

IRS pushes to rein in tax-exempt political groups
Wednesday, Nov 27, 2013 12:16 PM PST
FILE - In this Friday, March 22, 2013, file photo, the exterior of the Internal Revenue Service building in Washington, is shown. The Obama administration, on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, launched a bid to rein in the use of tax-exempt groups for political campaigning. The effort is an attempt to reduce the role of loosely regulated big-money political outfits like GOP political guru Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS and the pro-Obama Priorities USA. The Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Department said they want to prohibit such groups from using "candidate-related political activity" like running ads, registering voters or distributing campaign literature as activities that qualify them to be tax-exempt "social welfare" organizations. Syria tells Western foes to stop dreaming Assad will go
Wednesday, Nov 27, 2013 05:55 AM PST
AssadBy Dominic Evans BEIRUT (Reuters) - Western countries which demand that President Bashar al-Assad step down should either stop dreaming or forget attending peace talks in January, Syria said on Wednesday. Responding to an announcement that the long-delayed "Geneva 2" conference aimed at resolving Syria's civil war will be held on January 22, it said Assad's government would take part in the meeting but reiterated that it had no plans to surrender power. The head of the Western-backed Free Syrian Army rebel brigades has rejected the Geneva talks and says there will be no ceasefire during the meeting. The National Coalition opposition group, which also has Western support but minimal influence over fighters on the ground, says it will decide next month whether to go to Geneva.

Democrats Fear Obamacare Will Cost Them The Senate
Tuesday, Nov 26, 2013 09:53 PM PST
Last week, President Obama's pollster Joel Benenson sent a memo to congressional Democrats encouraging them to refocus attention on the economy and ignore the health care chaos that has consumed the administration for the last two months. The three-page set of talking points argued that the media's relentless focus on the Obamacare website is a "distraction" from more important work on the minds of voters. But for Senate Democrats who backed the unpopular legislation, avoiding the subject isn't so easy. Republicans are armed with reams of polling data showing how the health care law could overturn the Democrats' majority, and are already hitting vulnerable Democrats on the subject.
