For lawmakers, it is about a section of the law that may _ or may not _ require them to toss some staffers off of their federal health insurance and into the Affordable Care Act's exchanges. (AP Photo/U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, File)WASHINGTON (AP) — Think you're confused by "Obamacare"? It's roiling Capitol Hill behind the scenes, too.

Obama approval rating sinks: a self-inflicted wound?
Friday, Nov 01, 2013 10:15 AM PDT
And in the spirit of President Harry "Buck Stops Here" Truman, Mr. Obama may have no one but himself to blame for the botched rollout of HealthCare.gov, the website whose proper functioning is key to the success of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the signature initiative of Obama's presidency. The simultaneous diplomatic brouhaha over US eavesdropping on close allies, which also apparently blind-sided the president, reinforces the impression that Obama operates in a bubble. This week, public outrage over Americans receiving health-insurance cancellation notices has added to Obama's woes, as his longstanding promise that people who "like their plan can keep their plan" has proved to be false. All the stumbles are likely behind Obama's sinking job approval ratings.

Israel 'bombs' Syria as envoy presses peace talks bid
Friday, Nov 01, 2013 11:36 AM PDT
An image grab taken from Syrian television shows an inspector from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) at work at an undisclosed location in Syria on October 8, 2013Israel has reportedly bombed a Syrian base to halt an arms shipment to Hezbollah, while the UN-Arab League envoy said Friday there could be no peace talks without the opposition. The reported air strike on a military base in regime stronghold Latakia on Wednesday would be the first Israeli strike on Syria since a US-Russian accord on chemical weapons averted punitive US military action last month. Israel did not comment on the reports, but has struck Syria in the past and warned it will continue to take action to prevent weapons from falling into the hands of Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah. Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya television said Israel hit a shipment of surface-to-surface missiles destined for Hezbollah, which is fighting alongside the regime.

Israel vows to deny Hezbollah weapons as details of Syria raid emerge
Friday, Nov 01, 2013 11:30 AM PDT
Israeli PM Netanyahu sits next to armed forces chief Gantz and minister Erdan during a drill in JerusalemBy Crispian Balmer JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel said it would not allow advanced weapons to fall into the hands of Hezbollah, after a raid on Syria that opposition sources said had hit an air force garrison believed to be holding Russian-made missiles destined for the militant group. Israel has a clear policy on Syria and will continue to enforce it, officials said on Friday, after U.S. and European sources said Israel had launched a new attack on its warring neighbor. Israel declined to comment on leaks to U.S. media that its planes had hit a Syrian base near the port of Latakia, targeting missiles that it thought were destined for its Lebanese enemy, Hezbollah. "We have said many times that we will not allow the transfer of advanced weapons to Hezbollah," said Home Front Defense Minister Gilad Erdan, a member of the inner security cabinet which met hours before the alleged Israeli attack.
