Handout of a still image from video showing an artist's rendering of a statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai PatelBy Frank Jack Daniel and Sruthi Gottipati NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Indian opposition leader Narendra Modi launched the construction of the world's tallest statue on Thursday, a $338 million project in honor of one of the country's founding fathers, that he is using to undermine the ruling Nehru-Gandhi political family. The statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who was first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's deputy and his interior minister, but often at odds with him, is to be built on a river island in Gujarat, the home state of both Patel and Modi. "The world will be forced to look at India when this statue stands tall," said Modi, who rules Gujarat as chief minister and is the leading opposition candidate for prime minister in general elections due by next May. His main rival in the election is the ruling Congress party's Rahul Gandhi, Nehru's great-grandson. Thursday marked the 138th birth anniversary of Patel, and Modi said earlier this week: "Every Indian regrets Sardar Patel did not become the first prime minister.

Thursday, Oct 31, 2013 04:30 AM PDT
A Bewitching History: Why Witches Ride BroomsticksBut few likely know the murky tale of how witches came to be associated with those familiar household objects. According to legend, witches used herbs with psychoactive properties like henbane in their potions, or "flying ointments." Some historical accounts suggest witches applied these ointments to their nether regions. Lady Alice Kyteler, Ireland's earliest known accused witch, was condemned to death for using sorcery to kill her husband in 1324. In his "Quaestio de Strigis" of 1470, Bergamo writes of witches who on "certain days or nights they anoint a staff and ride on it to the appointed place or anoint themselves under the arms and in other hairy places." U.S. Navy cancels notice on possible F/A-18 fighter jet order

A U.S. Navy F/A 18 Hornet aircraft prepares its tailhook to catch an arresting wire in a landing maneuver during a tour of the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier on patrol in the South China SeaBy Andrea Shalal-Esa WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Navy on Thursday canceled a notice about a possible order of up to 36 more Boeing Co F/A-18 fighter jets or EA-18G electronic warfare planes after the posting on a federal procurement website sparked confusion this week. Boeing has sought for years to sell the Navy more of its F/A-18E/F Super Hornets for use on aircraft carriers, as a hedge in case the more capable carrier variant of the F-35 fighter jet runs into further delays or technical challenges. Navy officials this week said they had no plans to buy more Super Hornets or EA-18G Growlers in fiscal 2015 despite the notice on a federal procurement website.

US unearths new drug 'supertunnel' under Mexican border
Thursday, Oct 31, 2013 04:47 PM PDT
This image released by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Homeland Security agent enters the interior of the tunnel on October 31, 2013Zig-zagging for a third of a mile beneath the border between San Diego and Tijuana, the newly-constructed tunnel was equipped with an electric-powered rail system to carry the drugs, as well as ventilation. For the first time, agents seized cocaine intended to be smuggled through the tunnel as well as more than eight tons of marijuana, indicating that Mexican drug cartels are getting increasingly "desperate," they said. "These cartels are foolish to think they're shoveling under the radar," said US Attorney for Southern California Laura Duffy at a press conference outside the San Diego warehouse where the US end of the tunnel was found Wednesday. They'll do anything they can to get into the US," said Bill Sherman, head of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)'s San Diego office.
