The nation's weather
Fri,13 Jul 2012 01:59 AM PDT
Associated Press -

This NOAA satellite image taken Sunday, July 01, 2012 at 1:45 a.m. EDT shows clouds develop over the Central US, as a low pressure system moves off the Rockies and into the Plains. This allows for scattered showers and thunderstorms to spread from the Plains and into the Midwest. Some of these storms turn severe with large hail and strong winds. Meanwhile to the south, an area of low pressure over the western Gulf of Mexico maintains storms across eastern Texas. At the same time, hot temperatures will continue from the Mississippi River Valley through the Eastern Seaboard. Wed,11 Jul 2012 02:49 PM PDT

Global warming tied to risk of weather extremes
Wed,11 Jul 2012 05:35 AM PDT
Associated Press -

FILE - In this Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011 file photo, Texas State Park police officer Thomas Bigham walks across the cracked lake bed of O.C. Fisher Lake in San Angelo, Texas. A combination of the long periods of 100-plus degree days and the lack of rain in the drought-stricken region has dried up the lake that once spanned over 5400 acres. The year 2011 brought a record heat wave to Texas, massive floods in Bangkok and an unusually warm November in England. How much has global warming boosted the chances of events like that? Quite a lot in Texas and England, but apparently not at all in Bangkok, according to new analyses released Tuesday, July 10, 2012. Researchers calculated that global warming has made such a Texas heat wave about 20 times more likely to happen during a La Nina year. (AP Photo/Tony Gutierrez)Last year brought a record heat wave to Texas, massive floods in Bangkok and an unusually warm November in England. Opinion: Big Campaign Spending: Government by the 1 Percent
Wed,11 Jul 2012 03:39 AM PDT
National Journal - Here's what we must come to see: America has lost the capacity to govern. On a wide range of critical issues--from global warming to tax reform, from effective financial regulation to real health care change, from the deficit to defense spending--we have lost the capacity to do anything other than suffer through a miserable status quo. If there is a ship of state, its rudder has been lost. We are drifting. We can't change course. And eventually, and with absolute certainty, in waters such as these, a drifting ship will sink. England flood risk to rise fourfold by 2035-report
Wed,11 Jul 2012 03:34 AM PDT
Reuters -

A van drives through flood water at Littlehampton in southern EnglandLONDON (Reuters) - The risk of flooding for many English homes and businesses could increase fourfold by 2035 if more action to deal with the impact of climate change is not taken, government advisers said on Wednesday. As severe floods continue to batter parts of Britain after the wettest June since records began, around one in seven homes and businesses face some kind of flood risk, the climate advisers said. Around 160,000 properties would be at risk by 2035 if better planning and more investment was made in flood defences, compared with 610,000 at risk if no action was taken, they said. ...

Some of the hundreds of totally destroyed homes are seen in the aftermath of the Waldo Canyon fire in Colorado SpringsLONDON (Reuters) - Insurers face claims of almost $2 billion from fires, hail and thunderstorms that hit parts of the United States last month, broker Aon Benfield said, though the impact of natural catastrophes so far in 2012 remains well below last year.
