Ebola outbreak in Uganda kills 13: official

Reuters - KAMPALA (Reuters) - An outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus has killed 13 people in Uganda and efforts are under way to contain the hemorrhagic fever, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Saturday. China cancels waste project after protests turn violent

The demonstration was the latest in a string of protests sparked by fears of environmental degradation and highlights the social tensions the government in Beijing faces as it approaches a leadership transition this year. Reuters - LONDON (Reuters) - The International Olympics Committee (IOC) said on Saturday that 1001 drugs tests have been conducted since the start of the London 2012 Olympic period on July 16. Of these, 715 were urine tests and 286 were tests on blood. IOC President Jacques Rogge says a crackdown on doping cheats in the run-up to the London Olympics has been a success, with testers catching more than 100 athletes using performance-enhancing drugs in recent months. ... India's Dr Reddy's says U.S. regulator lifts ban on Mexico plant

Reuters - (Reuters) - Dr Reddy's Laboratories, India's No. 2 drugmaker by sales, said the U.S. drug regulator has lifted a ban on its manufacturing unit in Mexico and that it can start shipping products from the facility to the United States. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration had issued a warning letter to the company's manufacturing unit at Cuernavaca in June last year saying it had violated manufacturing standards, and stopped shipments to the U.S. ... At doses used in AIDS, cancer and pain patients, people weaved side to side more and had a slower reaction time in the hours after using the drug, researchers from the Netherlands found. For people who hadn't built up a tolerance to marijuana, those effects were similar to driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08, the point at which drivers are considered legally impaired, they said. ...

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Dementia may be overlooked as one of the biggest contributors to death in the U.S., thanks to oversimplistic death certificates, says a new study. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) attributed only three percent of recent deaths to dementia, the condition contributed to 13 percent of deaths among the population the researchers studied. Ex-smokers have higher risks for bowel diseases

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Compared to people who've never smoked, former smokers have a higher risk of developing two inflammatory bowel diseases, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, according to a new study. "The increased risk of ulcerative colitis following smoking cessation persisted even two decades after cessation," said Dr. Leslie Higuchi, the lead author of the study and a researcher at Children's Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School. ... Fiber-added foods may not stem your hunger

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Fiber-enriched processed foods promise a healthier version of your favorite snacks, but do not expect them to keep your hunger at bay, a small study suggests. In a short-term study of 22 women, researchers found no hunger-quashing effects of chocolate bars containing four different "functional fibers," such as inulin - aka "chicory root extract" - commonly found in fiber-enriched processed foods. Overall, the women were just as hungry come lunch time as they were on a day when they ate a low-fiber bar for breakfast. ... Full Story
