Canada to study health impact of wind turbine noise

Fifteen new wind turbines were officially opened by Sprott Power Corporation in Amherst(Reuters) - Canada will conduct a study to explore if there is a relationship between wind turbine noise and health problems reported by people living near wind power developments, the government health department said on Tuesday. "This study is in response to questions from residents living near wind farms about possible health effects of low frequency noise generated by wind turbines," Leona Aglukkaq, Canada's health minister, said in a statement. ...

Tax businesses see profits in healthcare law

Reuters - WASHINGTON (Reuters) - While some see the new healthcare law as a source of controversy, tax preparation companies see it as an opportunity, hoping it will bring in millions of new and confused customers. Under the Affordable Care Act, most of those who sign up for health insurance will receive a federal tax credit. At the same time, the government will impose a tax on most people who do not obtain health insurance. More profit warnings hit Wall Street

A sales warning from engine maker Cummins Inc came on top of earlier weak forecasts from chipmakers Applied Materials Inc and Advanced Micro Devices , causing the market to extend losses in afternoon trading. The news sent the S&P 500 down for a fourth consecutive day, the index's longest downward streak since May when it fell for six straight days. Moms' caffeine not tied to kids' behavior problems

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - If your kindergartner is hyperactive, there's no reason to blame the caffeine you had during pregnancy, new research suggests. In a study of more than 3,400 five- and six-year-olds, reported in the journal Pediatrics, researchers found no evidence that the children's behavioral problems were related to their mothers' caffeine intake during pregnancy. The odds of hyperactivity, inattention or other issues at home or school were not raised among kids whose moms had downed more than 425 milligrams of caffeine per day during pregnancy. ... Full Story

Ranbaxy puts biosimilars into gear

Reuters - (Reuters) - Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd will launch at least three copies of biotech medicines in India by 2015, mostly to treat cancer, and needs to develop such high-tech drugs to remain a serious player in the global generics business, Chief Executive Arun Sawhney said on Tuesday. Sawhney said that Ranbaxy, majority-owned by Japanese drugmaker Daiichi Sankyo, will introduce a "biosimilar" cancer treatment in India next year and follow up with at least two other biosimilars in the same market over the following year or two. ... H1N1 vaccine tied to small Guillain-Barre risk

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Older adults who got the H1N1 flu vaccine in 2009 had a slightly increased risk of Guillain-Barre Syndrome - but the shots weren't linked to birth defects in babies of vaccinated women, according to two new studies released today. Researchers said that even with the extra cases of Guillain-Barre, reported in eastern Canada, the flu shots still did more good than harm. "The risk is pretty small," said Dr. Claudia Vellozzi, deputy director of the Immunization Safety Office at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who wasn't involved in the new research. ... "In response to media inquiries and to dispel rumors and inaccurate reports, we'd like to state that Dr. Buss is in a local hospital where he is being treated for dehydration," Lakers spokesman John Black said in a written statement. Black said Buss, 78, was recovering and expected to be released soon. No further details were released. Buss purchased the Lakers in 1979. The team has won 10 NBA championships since then. ...

Orthofix to pay $5.2 million to settle bribery charges

Reuters - (Reuters) - Medical device maker Orthofix International NV will pay $5.2 million to settle charges that its Mexican subsidiary paid bribes to government officials to obtain sales contracts with hospitals, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said. The SEC alleged the company's Promeca subsidiary regularly paid bribes, referred to as "chocolates," in the form of cash, laptop computers, televisions and appliances in a scheme that yielded nearly $5 million in illegal profits over a period of seven years. ... Cummins warns on sales, shares slide

Reuters - (Reuters) - U.S. engine maker Cummins Inc cut its full-year sales forecast on Tuesday, citing weaker U.S. orders from truck and power generation customers, a stronger dollar and softer demand in emerging markets, but it also raised its dividend. Shares of Cummins slid 10 percent in afternoon trading after the company said it expects second-quarter sales of about $4.45 billion, and warned that it sees full-year sales "in line" with 2011 rather than growing by 10 percent as it had earlier forecast. Atrium unit recalls supplements on salmonella concerns

Reuters - WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Sedona Labs, a unit of Canada's Atrium Innovations Inc, is recalling two children's dietary supplements because they may be tainted with salmonella, the company said. Sedona is pulling some lots of its iFlora Kids Multi-Probiotic and iFlora 4-Kids Powder because the company's supplier of galactooligosaccharide has recalled the ingredient because of possible salmonella contamination, Sedona said in a statement on the Food and Drug Administration website. Five doctors settle SEC insider trading charges

Study confirms uncircumcised boys' UTI risk

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Baby boys who are uncircumcised have an increased risk of urinary tract infection - whether their foreskin is "tight" or not, a study published Monday finds. Doctors have long known that baby boys who remain uncircumcised are more likely to get a urinary tract infection (UTI) than circumcised babies are. But their absolute risk is still low, said Dr. Alexander Sasha Dubrovsky, the lead researcher on the new study. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), an uncircumcised boy has about a one in 100 chance of developing a UTI in his first year of life. ... Full Story
