Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters) - Maine Governor Paul LePage apologized on Monday for calling the U.S. Internal Revenue Service the "Gestapo" during criticism of President Barack Obama's healthcare law. The Republican governor compared the tax agency to Nazi secret police during a weekend radio address on healthcare. "You must buy health insurance or pay the new Gestapo — the IRS," he said, according to local media reports. Democrats criticized the governor and called the remarks offensive. ... Full Story

Smoking in movies may turn teens to cigarettes: study

The lead author of the report, which appeared in Pediatrics, said the conclusion supports the idea that the smoking itself - not the sex, profanity or violence that may go along with it in certain films - influences teens to take up the habit. ...

Babies in dog-owning families may be healthier: study

Youngsters toboggan in Princes Risborough, southern England(Reuters) - Dogs are no longer just man's best friend - the furry family members may also protect infants against breathing problems and infections, according to a European study. Researchers, whose report appeared in the journal Pediatrics, found that Finnish babies who lived with a dog - or, to a lesser extent, a cat - spent fewer weeks with ear infections, coughs or runny noses. They were also less likely to need antibiotics than infants in pet-free homes. ...

Texas Governor Perry announces he is dropping his run for the Republican U.S. presidential nomination during a news conference in CharlestonAUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Governor Rick Perry said on Monday Texas will not implement an expansion of the Medicaid program or create a health insurance exchange, placing the state with the highest percentage of people without insurance outside key parts of President Barack Obama's signature law. The announcement makes Texas the most populous state that has rejected the provisions. Some 6.2 million people are without health insurance in Texas, or 24.6 percent of the state population, the highest percentage in the nation. BioMimetic submits more data on bone graft product

Reuters - (Reuters) - BioMimetic Therapeutics Inc said it submitted additional data sought by health regulators for the marketing approval of the company's bone graft product, sending its shares up 14 percent after the bell. The biotechnology company said it filed an amended application saying that the bone graft product, Augment, is not inferior to autograft. Reuters - WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Health regulators are hoping more education for doctors and patients can stem the growing tide of prescription painkiller abuse in the United States. The Food and Drug Administration is mandating that all companies that make long-acting or extended-release opioid medicines - including painkillers like oxycodone and methadone - fund training programs for doctors and distribute info sheets for patients that promote proper use of the pills. ... The engineers, who design and perform major service at CANDU reactors in Canada and around the world, are not responsible for day-to-day reactor operations. Expensive, newer stents not better for all patients

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Many heart patients get newer, pricey stents inserted during artery-clearing procedures, even if it's not clear they'd be worse off with more basic models, a new study suggests. Along with being more costly, so-called drug-eluting stents require patients to take aspirin and other blood-thinning drugs for a longer period of time after their procedure - which may mean they have to put off future elective surgeries because of bleeding risks, according to one researcher who worked on the report. ... Study supports urinary tract infection protection from cranberries

Researchers found cranberry products seemed especially helpful for women who had trouble with recurrent UTIs. QLT's workforce cut, CEO quits after shareholder coup
