California fugitive caught in Guatemala after 18 years on the run

Reuters - LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A California man who spent 18 years on the run from charges that he molested a 4-year-old girl has been arrested in Guatemala and returned to the United States for prosecution, authorities said on Tuesday. Jeffrey Reed Parish, 65, was taken into custody by Guatemalan police without incident on Thursday afternoon at his home in Panajachel, about 90 miles from Guatemala City, said FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller. Eimiller said the fugitive, who was living under the assumed name "Blake," did not resist and "appeared to know why he was being arrested. ... Full Story

Reuters - KABUL (Reuters) - A rogue Afghan soldier who killed four French soldiers in a January attack that prompted Paris to accelerate its troop withdrawal from Afghanistan has been sentenced to death, a defense ministry spokesman in Kabul said on Tuesday. The soldier, Abdul Sabor, was sentenced to be hanged following a military court martial at Kabul's main Pul-i-Chakri prison, defense ministry deputy spokesman Brigadier General Dawlat Waziri told Reuters. Reuters - ABU DHABI/DUBAI (Reuters) - Three Emirati Islamists, including a prominent lawyer, were arrested in the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, relatives and activists said, extending a crackdown on political dissidents in the Gulf oil producer. The arrests brought to 20 the number of dissidents detained since April. Most of them have been Islamists, targeted by a government clampdown amid concerns they may be emboldened by the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood in other Arab countries.
