Severe weather warnings to be sent directly to smartphones

BGR News -  The National Weather Service will begin sending severe weather warnings to smartphone owners in the path of a dangerous storm. The NWS's new Wireless Emergency Alerts system will be able to warn Americans about impending weather, even if they are not watching television or listening to the radio. The system will notify people about approaching tornadoes, hurricanes, typhoons, tsunamis, flash floods, extreme winds, blizzards and ice and dust storms, the Associated Press reported. Warnings will come in the form of a free text message that will be no more than 90 characters and will be sent to "late-model smartphones" that will then sound a special alert and vibrate. UK risks missing climate goals with recovery: adviser

Reuters - LONDON (Reuters) - Britain is at risk of missing its future climate goals, because the economic slump, rather than proactive policy, has been the main reason for a decline in the country's greenhouse gas emissions, a government adviser warned on Thursday. (Reuters) - Cooler temperatures and lighter winds helped firefighters on Thursday in the battle against Colorado's Waldo Canyon fire, which has destroyed hundreds of homes and forced more than 35,000 people to flee. Thursday marked the first day in five days when a so-called red flag warning - indicating conditions that could increase wildfire activity - was not being posted in the Colorado Springs area, authorities said.
