Soccer-Ecuador count on wingers for World Cup challenge Tuesday, Mar 04, 2014 11:36 AM PST By Rex Gowar LONDON, March 4 (Reuters) - Ecuador will put their wingers to the test in a World Cup warm-up against fellow finalists Australia in London on Wednesday as coach Reinaldo Rueda looks to exploit the country's natural flair on the flanks. "Ecuador have that gift, they have men who can tip the balance on the wings," Rueda told Reuters as he prepared his team for their first match of the year at Millwall's New Den stadium. "It's a culture the players pick up from when they are young and it's one of Ecuador's best options (in attack)," Rueda said in an interview at the team's hotel overlooking the River Thames. Jefferson Montero, now playing for Morelia in Mexico after a spell at Real Betis, is outstanding on the left with Manchester United's Antonio Valencia, a veteran of the 2006 finals, bringing greater experience to the side on the right. Soccer-England employ psychologist in bid to shine in Brazil Tuesday, Mar 04, 2014 11:21 AM PST Sports psychologist Steve Peters has been called on to give England renewed hope at the soccer World Cup having worked wonders for Britain's cyclists at the Olympics and helped Liverpool's Premier League title challenge. "He has got a fantastic record," England manager Roy Hodgson said on Tuesday ahead of his side's friendly international against Denmark at Wembley on Wednesday. "We are happy we have got the man we wanted." England have performed dismally at the last two major tournaments having been outclassed by Germany in the round of 16 at the South Africa World Cup in 2010 and losing to Italy on penalties in the quarter-finals of Euro 2012. Penalty shootouts have been the Achilles heel of a succession of England teams, although Hodgson said Peters had not been signed up purely to remedy that problem. Full Story | Top |

Soccer-France not among World Cup favourites, says Deschamps Tuesday, Mar 04, 2014 08:57 AM PST France, who have failed to shine at major tournaments since the 2006 World Cup, cannot pretend to be among this year's World Cup favourites, coach Didier Deschamps said on Tuesday. Les Bleus won the World Cup on home soil in 1998 and followed up with the Euro 2000 title before Zinedine Zidane's comeback inspired them to the 2006 World Cup final. They have never recovered from the playmaker's retirement, however, being knocked out in the first round of Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup before reaching the quarter-finals of Euro 2012. "You can discuss the FIFA rankings (system) but it's there," he added, referring to France's 18th place in the list. Full Story | Top |
