Australian Bowditch leads by three shots at Texas Open
Saturday, Mar 29, 2014 05:17 PM PDT
(Reuters) - Australian Steven Bowditch chipped in at the first two holes on his way to a three-shot lead after the third round at the $6.2 million Texas Open on Saturday. Boosted by the hot start, Bowditch continued to display an exquisite short game, recovering from some poor long shots to notch just one bogey on his way to a four-under-par 68 at the TPC San Antonio. "I didn't hit the ball real well today at all," Bowditch told reporters after posting a 12-under 204 total with one round left. Matt Kuchar (65) carded the lowest round of the week to storm into a tie for second on nine-under with fellow American Andrew Loupe (70), who bogeyed the par-five 18th.

Rugby-Horne citation adds insult to Waratahs' injury
Saturday, Mar 29, 2014 05:06 PM PDT
The New South Wales Waratahs' humbling loss to the Super Rugby-leading Sharks in Durban on Saturday has been compounded by a citation to winger Rob Horne for striking. The 15-test Wallabies back was penalised after coming into contact with the Sharks' Francois Steyn early in the 32-10 mauling. Horne's likely ban for at least a week will tempt selectors to rush prolific try-scorer Israel Folau back from a throat injury after the re-jigged Waratahs' backline barely fired a shot in the absence of their explosive fullback. Folau, who has scored eight tries in four matches this season, flew to South Africa on Saturday to join the Waratahs camp but only rated himself a '50-50' chance to line up against the Stormers in Cape Town next week.

Avalanche make playoffs, Duchene injures knee
Saturday, Mar 29, 2014 04:41 PM PDT
(Reuters) - Colorado Avalanche, once a National Hockey League playoff regular, will return for the first time since 2010 after claiming a 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. Since relocating from Quebec in 1995, the Avalanche has made 12 playoff appearances, claiming Stanley Cup titles in 1995-96 and 2000-01, but it has been slim pickings since being knocked out in the first round of the 2009-10 postseason. Goaltender Semyon Varlamov stopped a season high 47 shots while John Mitchell, Paul Stastny and Cody McLeod all scored goals against the Sharks to clinch their return to the big time. But the celebration was somewhat tempered by a left knee injury to center Matt Duchene who leads the team in scoring with 70 points.

Soccer-Beaten Monaco fail to sparkle at Evian
Saturday, Mar 29, 2014 03:10 PM PDT
(Adds details) PARIS, March 29 (Reuters) - Lowly Evian Thonon Gaillard all but extinguished Monaco's slim Ligue 1 title hopes on Saturday, a late penalty by Cedric Mongongu handing Claudio Ranieri's side a surprise 1-0 away defeat. Defender Mongongu proved a thorn in the flesh of his former club as he converted an 84th-minute spot kick after Chelsea and Real Madrid old boy Ricardo Carvalho handled the ball in the box. Monaco, second in the table, are now 13 points adrift of leaders Paris St Germain with seven matches left to play. PSG, who host Chelsea in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday, won 1-0 at Nice on Friday thanks to an own goal from Thimothee Kolodziejczak.

Williams beats Li to claim seventh Miami title
Saturday, Mar 29, 2014 03:09 PM PDT
Tennis: Sony Open-Williams v NaBy Steve Keating MIAMI (Reuters) - Proving there is no place like home, world number one Serena Williams swept past China's Li Na 7-5 6-1 in the final of the Sony Open on Saturday, collecting a record seventh win on the Miami hardcourts. Williams, who lives an hour's drive from the Tennis Center at Crandon Park and considers the tournament her home event, treated the second ranked Li like an unwelcome guest, needing just two hours on a steamy center court to collect her 59th career title, the $787,000 winner's purse pushing her career earnings over $55 million. In 14 appearances at the Miami event Williams has driven back to her Palm Beach Gardens home with the trophy half the time, her seven titles two better than the five each she has won at Australian, U.S. Open and Wimbledon grand slams. EXCITED After watching Li's forehand return slam into the net to end the contest, a delighted Williams danced around the court, raising seven fingers in the air signaling each of her Miami titles.
