Climate Study: Rising Seas Could Wipe Out Many Cultural Landmarks
Tuesday, Mar 04, 2014 06:10 PM PST
If current trends in global warming continue unmitigated, some of the world's most well-known and historically significant cultural landmarks — including the Statue of Liberty in New York City, the Tower of London in the United Kingdom, and the archaeological sites of Pompeii in Italy — could be destroyed by rising global sea levels over the next 2,000 years, according to new research. A new study examining the long-term effects of sea-level rise on the 720 spots around the world that have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites found that roughly 20 percent of them could be ruined if temperatures rise 5.4 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius) above pre-industrial levels over the next two millennia, said study lead author Ben Marzeion, an assistant professor at the Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics at the University of Innsbruck in Austria. "I didn't expect that so many of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites would be affected," Marzeion told Live Science.

Global warming may threaten World Heritage sites
Tuesday, Mar 04, 2014 06:00 PM PST
File photo taken in October 2013 shows tourists looking at the Statue of Liberty while on a cruise in the New York harborThe sightseer of 4014 may have to pay a virtual visit to the Tower of London or Statue of Liberty, said a climate study Wednesday that warned of dramatic ocean encroachment on heritage sites. While modern civilisation is fascinated by the pyramids of Egypt, Rome's Colosseum and the Parthenon in Greece, much of this inheritance as well as our own cultural legacy may be lost to sea-levels rising as much as 1.8 metres (six feet) due to global warming, researchers said. Out of more than 700 listed UNESCO World Heritage sites, nearly 140 risk being flooded in 2,000 years' time, they projected in a study published in the journal Environmental Research Letters. These also include the Sydney Opera House, Venice in Italy, Japan's Hiroshima Peace Memorial and Robben Island in South Africa where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years.

U.S. payrolls improvement eyed, but weather still a drag
Tuesday, Mar 04, 2014 02:42 PM PST
People attend a job training and resource fair at Coney Island in New YorkBy Lucia Mutikani WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. job growth likely picked up enough in February to encourage the Federal Reserve to continue to scale back its monetary stimulus, although the gain is likely to be tepid given the unrelentingly harsh winter weather. "We cannot remember another year when inclement weather persisted for three consecutive payroll periods," said Peter D'Antonio, an economist at Citigroup in New York. Nonfarm payrolls averaged about 205,000 jobs per month in the first 11 months of in 2013. Economists estimate the weather could depress February payrolls by between 25,000 and 50,000 jobs.
