Earth Hour: Turn Out the Lights—Save the Planet

That's what the organizers of the eighth annual Earth Hour are hoping to accomplish this year as a way to raise awareness about climate change and ravenous energy consumption. Monuments, buildings, and dwellings around the world—including the Empire State Building, the Sydney Opera House, the pyramids of Egypt, and the Eiffel Tower—will be plunged into darkness. Earth Hour began in 2007 in Sydney, when the World Wildlife Fund organized 2.2 million people—or 57 percent of the city—to dim their lights to signify their concern for the planet. Earth Hour 2013 drew participants from 7,000 cities and more than 150 countries.
