Soccer-Predator Villa waiting in the wings for Atletico
Sunday, Mar 09, 2014 07:00 PM PDT
By Iain Rogers MADRID, March 10 (Reuters) - David Villa has been unable to rediscover his consistency since he broke his leg in late 2011 but Spain's record scorer could still be crucial to Atletico Madrid's hopes of Champions League success this season. The 32-year-old Asturian, who has played second fiddle to Atletico's Brazil-born forward Diego Costa for most of the season, showed with a La Liga double at Celta Vigo on Saturday he still has the positional sense and predatory instinct that helped him score 56 goals in 95 appearances for the world and European champions. Villa was filling in for the suspended Costa at Celta and represents a potentially lethal backup weapon in coach Diego Simeone's armoury as Atletico seek a place in the last eight of Europe's elite club competition for the first time since 1997 at home to AC Milan on Tuesday.

Soccer-Perfectionist Guardiola unsatisfied with 6-1 win
Sunday, Mar 09, 2014 07:00 PM PDT
Pep Guardiola is well known to be a perfectionist and even Saturday's 6-1 win at VfL Wolfsburg has failed to fully satisfy the demanding Bayern Munich manager. Guardiola complained that his team allowed Wolfsburg too much possession in the first hour and has told them they cannot afford to make the same mistake in Tuesday's Champions League last 16 tie against Arsenal. "We scored four or five goals in a 20 minute spell but they were all on the counter-attack," said Guardiola, whose side host Arsenal in Tuesday's second leg with a 2-0 lead from the first match. "We did not dominate the match in the way we have dominated previous games," he said after Bayern scored five times in the last half hour, having fallen behind in the first half.

Woods back problems could cause Masters rethink
Sunday, Mar 09, 2014 06:30 PM PDT
PGA: WGC - Cadillac Championship-Final RoundBy Steve Keating DORAL, Florida (Reuters) - World number one Tiger Woods arrived at the WGC-Cadillac Championship with concerns over his fitness and gingerly walked off the Blue Monster Course on Sunday with new questions about his ailing back. With the year's first major just a month away, Woods' Masters preparations may have to be quickly reworked as he deals with back spasms that have plagued him through his last two events. "That's what set it off and then it was done after that, just see if I could actually manage through the round, keep the spasms at bay." Woods, a seven-time winner of the WGC-Cadillac, had surged into contention on Saturday with a third round 66 to start the final day three shots behind but returned a six-over 78 to finish tied for 25th.

Bayern boss Hoeness goes on trial for tax evasion
Sunday, Mar 09, 2014 05:05 PM PDT
File photo of Bayern Munich's President HoenessBy Jörn Poltz MUNICH (Reuters) - Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness, once one of Germany's most admired soccer managers, heads to court on Monday to face charges that he dodged taxes in a case that shocked the German public and spurred others to turn themselves in. Hoeness, who as a player won the World Cup with West Germany in 1974 and has been credited with turning Bayern Munich into one of the world's most respected clubs, has said he told tax authorities about his Swiss bank account and undeclared income of his own accord in January 2013. While he has now paid back the taxes and fines he owed, it is unclear whether he informed the tax office about his offence early enough or comprehensively enough. A regional court in Munich will decide on the 62-year-old's fate.

Hadley survives late Lee charge for PGA Tour win
Sunday, Mar 09, 2014 03:34 PM PDT
(Reuters) - PGA Tour rookie Chesson Hadley survived a late charge from Danny Lee to win the $3.5 million Puerto Rico Open by two strokes on Sunday. The American shot five-under-par 67 in his final round on Sunday but it was far from a cakewalk to victory as New Zealander Lee birdied the 13th, 15th and 16th holes to close the margin to one stroke with two holes left. "I was dead over there and I hit the nastiest little nipper and it snuck in the left door." Hadley had a poor final round at the Honda Classic last week, after which he admonished himself. "He made a couple of good up-and-downs and when he plays like that it's just really hard to catch." The Puerto Rico Open was contested by players who did not qualify for the WGC-Cadillac Championship.

Real punish Barca defeat by storming clear
Sunday, Mar 09, 2014 03:34 PM PDT
Real Madrid's Ronaldo celebrates after scoring a goal against Levante in MadridBy Iain Rogers MADRID (Reuters) - Real Madrid took full advantage of Barcelona's shock defeat at Real Valladolid with a 3-0 home win over 10-man Levante on Sunday that put Carlo Ancelotti's in-form side three points clear at the top of La Liga. Cristiano Ronaldo, the leading scorer in Spain this season, took his tally to 24 league goals when he headed the opener from Angel Di Maria's corner in the 11th minute and Marcelo added a second from Ronaldo's assist four minutes after the break. David Navarro was harshly shown a straight red card in the 64th minute for an innocuous-looking tackle on Ronaldo and fellow Levante defender Nikos Karampelas put the ball into his own net nine minutes from time.
