Australian prosecutors have withdrawn a 'courtsiding' charge brought against a British man at the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne, local media reported on Thursday. Melbourne police arrested Daniel Thomas Dobson, 22, at the tournament in January and charged him with one count of "engaging in conduct that would corrupt a betting outcome". Dobson, the first person charged under new legislation in Australia's southern state of Victoria, was not at the Melbourne Magistrates court on Thursday, having returned to Britain, the Australian Associated Press said.

Soccer-Sturridge goal eases England's Wembley wobbles
Wednesday, Mar 05, 2014 03:49 PM PST
(Adds details, quotes) By Mike Collett LONDON, March 5 (Reuters) - An 82nd-minute header by Daniel Sturridge was the only top-quality moment in a laboured performance as a pedestrian England team squeezed a 1-0 win over Denmark at Wembley on Wednesday. Sturridge, left unmarked at the far post, nodded substitute Adam Lallana's cross beyond the reach of Kasper Schmeichel who had a superb match in goal for Denmark. Apart from a late burst of attacking play, England were generally uninspiring against mediocre opposition who have failed to qualify for the World Cup in Brazil in June. On the plus side there were promising displays from young Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling and Southampton's debutant left back Luke Shaw who came on for Ashley Cole, winning his 107th cap, at halftime.

Soccer-Pedro eclipses debutant Costa as Spain down Italy
Wednesday, Mar 05, 2014 03:39 PM PST
(Adds quotes) By Iain Rogers MADRID, March 5 (Reuters) - Diego Costa made a low-key debut for Spain in a friendly against Italy on Wednesday and it was the much livelier Pedro who struck the only goal in a 1-0 victory for the world and European champions. All eyes were on Brazil-born Costa at Atletico Madrid's Calderon Stadium, where he plays his club football, but although he linked up well at times with his new team mates he did not come close to finding the net. The heavyweight clash between the last two nations to win the World Cup was predictably dominated by the Spanish and they were rewarded in the 63rd minute when Pedro was first to a loose ball and fired in off Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said he was happy with Costa's performance.

Soccer-Keepers shine as Argentina held in lively draw in Romania
Wednesday, Mar 05, 2014 03:27 PM PST
Romania held Argentina to a 0-0 draw on Wednesday in a lively friendly at the National Arena highlighted by a host of missed chances and good displays from the goalkeepers. The match in the Romanian capital, Argentina's last test before coach Alejandro Sabella announces his 23-man squad for the World Cup in Brazil, also featured former World Player of the Year Lionel Messi vomiting on the field early on. The visitors dominated the early stages with captain Messi delivering a corner that was headed just over the bar by defender Federico Fernandez and Gonzalo Higuain going close following a neat passing move. Romania's side, dominated by players from league leaders Steaua Bucharest, then started to press forward and created a couple of scoring chances.

Ronaldo took his international tally to 49, two more than the previous record set by Pauleta, as Portugal ran rings around the Indomitable Lions in a meeting of two World Cup finalists. Golf-France's Dubuisson given PGA Tour temporary membership
Wednesday, Mar 05, 2014 03:04 PM PST
Emerging young French golfer Victor Dubuisson has accepted a special temporary membership for the rest of the PGA Tour season, the tour said on Wednesday. Dubuisson, 23, played some dazzling golf in finishing runner-up to Australian Jason Day at the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship last month and posted a tie for 13th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Dubuisson made a great impression in his championship duel against Day that went to the 23rd hole in Arizona after he had conjured some Houdini-like escapes from the desert scrub. Dubuisson first made the golfing world sit up and take notice by winning the Turkish Airlines Open in November, eclipsing the likes of world number one Tiger Woods and U.S. Open champion Justin Rose for his first European Tour title.
