Dish, Disney reach long-term programming deal Monday, Mar 03, 2014 06:44 PM PST (Reuters) - After months of talks, Dish Network Corp and Walt Disney Co have reached a long-term programming agreement that allows the No.2 satellite provider to carry Disney-owned networks such as ABC and ESPN, the companies said. Dish will disable "AutoHop" commercial-skipping feature functionality for ABC content on its digital video recorder as a part of the agreement. Disney and Dish's programming agreement expired at the end of September, but the companies averted blackout of Disney's top networks for the satellite provider's 14 million customers. The extensive and expanded distribution agreement grants Dish rights to stream cleared linear and video-on-demand content from the ABC-owned broadcast stations, ABC Family, Disney Channel, ESPN and ESPN2, as part of an Internet-delivered, IP-based multichannel offering. Soccer-Former England managers rubbish Campbell claims Monday, Mar 03, 2014 04:23 PM PST (Adds former FA chief executive comments) LONDON, March 3 (Reuters) - Two former England managers and one of the country's most famous black players have rubbished allegations by Sol Campbell that he would have been national team captain for more than 10 years if he was white. Ex-Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur defender Campbell, who was born in east London to Jamaican parents, amassed 73 caps from 1996 to 2007 and captained England three times. Graham Taylor, in charge of the national team between 1990 and 1993, was staggered by the accusations. "I never had any influence on me to select who should be captain regardless of the colour of his skin." The 39-year-old Campbell's claims were revealed in extracts from his biography being serialised in the Sunday Times newspaper. Full Story | Top |

The injury-plagued Maybin missed all but 14 games in 2013 with a right wrist injury that required surgery and a torn ligament in his left knee. Cricket-Smith's retirement ushers in new era for South Africa Monday, Mar 03, 2014 03:39 PM PST By Nick Said CAPE TOWN, March 3 (Reuters) - He was seen as a brash, arrogant and aloof South African but no one can dispute the impact Graeme Smith had on the world stage as he became the most successful captain in test history. Smith's decision to retire from international cricket just nine weeks after Jacques Kallis quit will usher in a new era for South African cricket, which now finds itself shorn of experience and potentially in a leadership crisis. He has, in many ways, been the face of South African cricket over the last decade and played a key role in taking the side to the number one position in the test rankings. Thrust into the captaincy role at the age of 22 following the resignation of Shaun Pollock after South Africa's miserable first round exit at the 2003 World Cup on home soil, Smith admitted it took him four or five years to settle into the job. They finished sixth on their top flight return last season, qualifying for the Europa League. His side have struggled this season but hauled themselves six points clear of the relegation playoff place with a dramatic 2-1 win over VfB Stuttgart on Sunday. Full Story | Top |

Pistorius trial witness: 'bloodcurdling screams' then shots Monday, Mar 03, 2014 01:53 PM PST By David Dolan PRETORIA (Reuters) - The first witness at Oscar Pistorius' murder trial told the court on Monday she heard "bloodcurdling screams" from a woman followed by shots, a dramatic opening to a case that could see one of global sport's most admired role models jailed for life. Taking the stand after the Paralympic and Olympic star pleaded not guilty to murdering his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine's Day last year, neighbor Michelle Burger testified that she was woken in the middle of the night by a woman shouting for help. "I was still sitting in the bed and I heard her screams," Burger, who lives 177 meters (194 yards) from Pistorius' home in an adjacent housing complex, told the Pretoria High Court. Thinking it was a violent break-in - a possibility in crime-ridden South Africa - Burger said her husband called the private security firm guarding their upmarket Pretoria housing estate before the pair heard more shouts. The 33-year-old captain told team mates after the third day's play, catching all unaware, including Cricket South Africa (CSA) chiefs. His departure comes after arguably the world's greatest all-rounder Jacques Kallis quit the South Africa test team in December. "I have a young family to consider, and I felt that retiring at Newlands would be the best way to end it because I have called this place home since I was 18 years-old." The opener is a veteran of 117 tests, 109 of those as captain, and is the world record holder for the most test wins as skipper of a five-day team with 53. Full Story | Top |
