Tanaka goes scoreless in first game for Yankees Saturday, Mar 01, 2014 04:21 PM PST (Reuters) - The New York Yankees' latest big-money signing Masahiro Tanaka pitched two scoreless innings in his first spring training game for his new team against the Philadelphia Phillies in Tampa, Florida on Saturday. The 25-year-old Japanese, who possesses a wicked, diving split-finger fastball, allowed two hits and struck out three after being warmly greeted by the fans when he entered in relief for the fifth inning. "I was nervous, but it was a really good nervous," Tanaka told reporters, speaking through an interpreter. "Everything is new to me, so for today, I was just trying to locate my pitches where the catcher was holding his glove." Tanaka allowed a single to Darin Ruf, the first batter he faced, on an 0-2 fastball but recovered to record two flyouts to left field before striking out a swinging Cesar Hernandez on a 3-2 pitch. Steady McIlroy has two-stroke lead at Honda Classic Saturday, Mar 01, 2014 04:16 PM PST (Reuters) - Rory McIlroy was steady rather than spectacular as he extended his lead to two strokes after the third round at the $6 million Honda Classic in south Florida on Saturday. McIlroy missed only one green on the water-lined back nine as he compiled a one-under-par 69 in a moderate breeze at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens. You really have to be in control with your ball and for the most part this week I have been." Two-time major champion McIlroy, whose gallery included fiancée, tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, posted a 12-under 198 total. American Russell Henley (68), boosted by an unlikely eagle at the par-four 14th, moved into second place on 10-under, with Scotsman Russell Knox (68) alone in third position on nine-under. Snowboarder may have caused Montana avalanche that injured three Saturday, Mar 01, 2014 04:04 PM PST An avalanche that destroyed a house and injured three people in Missoula, Montana, may have been inadvertently triggered by a snowboarder riding a mountain slope that was closed for recreational use, federal authorities said on Saturday. The avalanche on Friday roared down Mount Jumbo and through a neighborhood northeast of downtown Missoula, several blocks from the University of Montana. A snowboarder riding a slope on Mount Jumbo triggered the avalanche, according to a report issued by the U.S. Forest Service avalanche center in Missoula. But Missoula police Sergeant Travis Welsh said investigators are still examining whether human activity like snowboarding caused the slide and whether the activity violated any laws.
