Seacrest arrives at the 2014 Vanity Fair Oscars Party in West Hollywood(Reuters) - BlackBerry Ltd won a preliminary injunction on Friday to ban Ryan Seacrest's Typo Products LLC from selling a $99 iPhone case after a judge agreed that television host's company had likely infringed on BlackBerry's patents. Time Warner Cable rejects Charter's call to drop Comcast merger
Friday, Mar 28, 2014 03:10 PM PDT
A Time Warner Cable van moves along 57th Street in New York(Reuters) - Time Warner Cable Inc said on Friday it was committed to a deal reached with larger cable operator Comcast Corp in response to calls by Charter Communications that shareholders reject the $45 billion merger. Charter, which was rebuffed in its bid for Time Warner Cable, said in a statement filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that the planned merger of Time Warner Cable and Comcast posed a high degree of regulatory risk and warned that approval could drag on until the first quarter of 2015. TWC and Comcast announced their all-stock agreement on February 13, which at the time gave the deal a value of $158.82 per share. Charter argued in the filing that, due to Comcast's declining share price, the value was now worth $141.16 a share.

Escalating attacks jangle nerves ahead of crucial Afghan vote
Friday, Mar 28, 2014 01:03 PM PDT
By Hamid Shalizi and Maria Golovnina KABUL (Reuters) - With a week to go before Afghanistan's presidential election, escalating violence across the country risks undermining the credibility of a vote meant to mark the first democratic transfer of power in Afghan history. The Taliban have declared war on the April 5 election, calling it a Western-backed sham and threatening to do everything in their power to derail the vote through a campaign of gun attacks, bombings and assassinations. A brazen raid by a squad of suicide bombers and gunmen on an election office in Kabul this week sent a chilling message to voters as they prepared to choose a successor to President Hamid Karzai. "Such attacks may not derail the election, but they will certainly create fear and anxiety among the people," said Nader Nadery, chairman of FEFA, Afghanistan's largest election monitoring group.

A dance number is performed in tribute to outstanding drama series nominee "Game of Thrones" at the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los AngelesBy David Gaffen NEW YORK (Reuters) - Mystical ice creatures, fire-breathing dragons, and the people caught in between return to the small screen come April 6, when HBO's "Game of Thrones" unsheathes a fourth season that could see it crowned as the cable network's most watched series in history. The medieval fantasy drama's fan base has grown substantially over its first three seasons, with sizable followings among both men and women thanks to its wrenching interpersonal relationships, complex plotting, and, being HBO, plenty of sex and violence. The show is based on the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series of novels by George R.R. Martin, of which five of an expected seven have been published. It takes place in the fictional world of Westeros, following more than two dozen regular characters amid a war for dominion between noble houses.

TV stations' test finds channel-sharing technically viable
Friday, Mar 28, 2014 07:44 AM PDT
Two television stations in Los Angeles that tested sharing radio frequencies found it technically viable, they said on Friday in a report to federal regulators who see the practice as one way to free up more airwaves for wireless broadband. Supported by the wireless industry group CTIA, public broadcasting station KLCS and multilingual station KJLA tried channel-sharing, in which they tested how many broadcasting streams can be combined onto one radio-frequency channel, possibly allowing the stations to give up some of the airwaves they now occupy. The experiment, approved last month by the Federal Communications Commission, "clearly proved channel sharing is feasible, and is a technically viable option for broadcasters with minimal impact for viewers," the CTIA and the stations said in the report. Channel sharing has been supported by the FCC as a potential way to clear up more airwaves, or spectrum, for a spectrum auction currently scheduled for 2015.
