RIM committee stresses importance of independent chair

A BlackBerry handset is displayed in Washington(Reuters) - A review of Research In Motions' leadership structure by a committee of independent directors has concluded that no future chief executive or other employee can be chairperson of the BlackBerry maker. The panel's findings were published on RIM's website late on Monday, a day before a Jan 31 deadline. The committee said in its report that it had recommended that RIM should separate the roles of Chair and CEO and amend the board mandate accordingly. ...

Mexicans overcharged billions for phone, web: study

Reuters - MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexicans have been overcharged $13.4 billion a year for phone and internet services as the industry dominated by billionaire Carlos Slim gouges customers and keeps the economy from growing, a study released on Monday said. Mexico, the second-largest economy in Latin America, cannot reach its growth potential until the cost of phone and internet access comes down and more people have easy access to telecom services, the report from the Organization for Co-operation and Development said. AT&T reorganizes management positions

"Stankey, who has led nearly every major AT&T business unit during his 27-year career, will be responsible for developing the roadmap to maximize future growth opportunities," AT&T said in a statement on Monday. AT&T also said Forrest Miller, its head of corporate strategy and mergers and acquisitions, was retiring. Miller had worked at AT&T for more than 30 years. ...

Libya minister to protect investment in Zamtel

Reuters - ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Libya will do all it can to protect its 75 percent stake in Zamtel, the fixed-line telecoms firm in Zambia, whose government announced plans last week to seize Libya's stake in the firm, Libyan Foreign Minister Ashour bin Khayyal said Monday. "The Zambian government has taken a unilateral action by nationalizing this company," Khayyal said, adding he had spoken to his Zambian counterpart about the issue at the African Union summit in the Ethiopian capital. ... Tablet boom makes Apple No 1 PC maker: research firm

In the fourth quarter, tablet demand helped drive the global PC market 16 percent higher than a year ago to 120 million computers, Canalys said. Excluding tablets, the market fell 0.4 percent from a year ago, said Canalys, one of the first research firms to include tablets in PC forecasts. Other firms have said they will likely follow. Symantec says pcAnywhere safe, offers free upgrade

To match Insight - CYBERSECURITY/IRANBOSTON (Reuters) - Symantec Corp said it is safe to use its pcAnywhere software for accessing remote PCs after it asked customers last week to disable the product because it put them at greater risk of being hacked. The software maker took the unusual step of urging customers to temporarily stop using the product after an investigation determined that the blueprints, or source code, to pcAnywhere were stolen in 2006. Symantec said on January 25 that the theft put users of all versions of the product at greater risk of losing data to hackers. ...

Recent online job postings by Amazon and Quidsi describe a new "sports and activities" business and an "Outdoor Sportsman destination," the analysts, led by Gary Balter, wrote in a note to investors. Reuters - PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Singer Nancy Sinatra may have had boots made for walking, but she never attended Pottstown Middle School. Starting Monday the Philadelphia suburban district is banning the wearing of fuzzy open-top boots, including the popular Ugg brand, to middle school classes because students have been stashing cell phones in the loose footwear, according to district director of community relations John Armato.
