US Navy 'game-changer': converting seawater into fuel
Monday, Apr 07, 2014 08:05 AM PDT
Dr. Heather Willauer explains how scientists at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC can make fuel from seawaterThe US Navy believes it has finally worked out the solution to a problem that has intrigued scientists for decades: how to take seawater and use it as fuel. The development of a liquid hydrocarbon fuel is being hailed as "a game-changer" because it would signficantly shorten the supply chain, a weak link that makes any force easier to attack. The US has a fleet of 15 military oil tankers, and only aircraft carriers and some submarines are equipped with nuclear propulsion. Vice Admiral Philip Cullom declared: "It's a huge milestone for us."

Wild weather for baby Prince George's first tour
Monday, Apr 07, 2014 03:33 AM PDT
Prince William, his wife Kate and baby Prince George arrive at the international airport in Wellington on April 7, 2014Britain's baby Prince George embarked Monday on his first official tour, visiting New Zealand with parents William and Kate, but the eight-month-old missed the famed Maori welcome after being whisked indoors amid wild weather. Strong winds, rain and poor visibility greeted the royals in Wellington at the start of a three-week visit to New Zealand and Australia that marks the beginning of a lifetime of regal duties for the pint-sized prince. Kate wore a buttoned-up red coat by designer Catherine Walker, adorned with a silver fern brooch that was a gift to Queen Elizabeth II when she visited New Zealand in 1953. "I don't think their enthusiasm for coming to New Zealand has been dampened at all by the fact that we all got wet today on the tarmac," Key told reporters.

Supreme Court declines free speech, gay marriage case
Monday, Apr 07, 2014 07:37 AM PDT
Supreme CourtBy Lawrence Hurley WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to consider whether a New Mexico photography company had free speech grounds to refuse to shoot the commitment ceremony of a same-sex couple. The court's refusal to intervene means an August 2013 New Mexico Supreme Court decision against the company remains intact. Albuquerque-based Elane Photography had said its free speech rights under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution should be a valid defense to the state's finding that it violated the New Mexico Human Rights Act. The company's owners, Elaine and Jonathan Huguenin, are Christians who oppose gay marriage.

Obama Isn't Deporting 'Gangbanger' Immigrants, But Ones Who Run Red Lights
Monday, Apr 07, 2014 08:30 AM PDT
Obama Isn't Deporting 'Gangbanger' Immigrants, But Ones Who Run Red LightsDespite President Obama's expressed commitment to deporting only "gang bangers" and criminals, an investigation by The New York Times found that two-thirds of undocumented immigrants who were deported had committed only minor crimes like traffic offenses. While Obama has suggested his administration is just going after bad guys — and anti-immigration conservatives like Steve King have claimed that for every undocumented good student there are 100 drug mules — the reality is that only 20 percent of the administration's 2 million deportees committed serious crimes. The Times found that approximately 394,000 of the Obama administration's 2 million deportees committed serious crimes like drug offenses. Two-thirds of those individuals had committed minor infractions, including traffic violations — from driving under the influence to running a red or yellow light — or didn't have criminal records.

Monday, Apr 07, 2014 04:09 PM PDT
Julian Gomez explains Obamacare to people at a health insurance enrolment event in CommerceBy Curtis Skinner NEW YORK (Reuters) - The percentage of Americans without health insurance dipped to its lowest in nearly six years due in part to U.S. President Barack Obama's healthcare reform law, commonly known as Obamacare, according to a Gallup poll released on Monday. Some 15.6 percent of Americans lacked health insurance in the first three months of 2014, down from a high of 18 percent in late 2013, according to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index survey. "'Obamacare' appears to be accomplishing its goal of increasing the percentage of Americans with health insurance coverage," the report said. Black and low-income Americans saw some of the most pronounced drops in the uninsured rate, with declines of more than 3 percentage points.

China gives US defence chief a tour of its aircraft carrier
Monday, Apr 07, 2014 09:45 AM PDT
US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel arrives at Yokota Air Force Base in Fussa, Japan on April 5, 2014US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel got a first-hand look at China's new aircraft carrier on Monday as Beijing offered an unprecedented glimpse into its growing military clout. Hagel praised the ship tour as a promising step forward for a fledgling US dialogue with the often secretive People's Liberation Army (PLA), but the two sides remained deeply divided on cyber-spying and regional territorial disputes. "He understands how significant it was for the PLA to grant his request for a tour, and he was impressed by the professionalism of the officers and crew," Pentagon press secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby said. Hagel's two-hour visit to the carrier in the port city of Qingdao kicked off a three-day trip to China, and officials said he was the first foreigner allowed aboard the vessel by the PLA.

Pro-Moscow protesters seize arms, declare republic; Kiev fears invasion
Monday, Apr 07, 2014 02:09 PM PDT
By Richard Balmforth and Lina Kushch KIEV/DONETSK, Ukraine (Reuters) - Pro-Moscow protesters in eastern Ukraine seized arms in one city and declared a separatist republic in another, in moves Kiev described on Monday as part of a Russian-orchestrated plan to justify an invasion to dismember the country. Kiev said the overnight seizure of public buildings in three cities in eastern Ukraine's mainly Russian-speaking industrial heartland were a replay of events in Crimea, the Black Sea peninsula Moscow seized and annexed last month. "An anti-Ukrainian plan is being put into operation ... under which foreign troops will cross the border and seize the territory of the country," Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk said in public remarks to his cabinet. "We will not allow this." Pro-Russian protesters seized official buildings in the eastern cities of Kharkiv, Luhansk and Donetsk on Sunday night, demanding that referendums be held on whether to join Russia like the one that preceded Moscow's takeover of Crimea.

Drug boat found in California near popular Malibu-area beach
Monday, Apr 07, 2014 05:32 PM PDT
Marijuana plants are displayed for sale at Canna Pi medical marijuana dispensary in SeattleBy Dana Feldman LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A drug smuggling boat loaded with roughly a ton of marijuana was found beached on Monday in California near a popular Malibu-area surfing spot, and three people located nearby were detained for questioning, a Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman said. The so-called panga boat was found at the Leo Carrillo beach, which is popular among local surfers, and was loaded with bundles of marijuana, said Deputy Joseph Baclawski of the Los Angeles sheriff department's special enforcement bureau. "Two thousand pounds (910 kg) is about all these pangas can fit." The past four years have seen an upswing in drug arrests along the Southern California coastline involving the deep V-bottom pangas, although it is rare to find a beached boat loaded with drugs on a popular beach during daylight hours, Baclawski said.

U.S. presses on with Mideast talks rescue attempt
Monday, Apr 07, 2014 03:56 AM PDT
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu chairs the weekly cabinet meeting in his office in Jerusalem, Sunday, April 6, 2014. Speaking at a weekly Cabinet meeting Sunday Netanyahu said the Palestinians have lots to lose by taking unilateral steps and will be answered in kind by Israel. Last week, the Palestinians renewed their push for membership in United Nations agencies. (AP Photo/Gali Tibbon, Pool)By Jeffrey Heller JERUSALEM (Reuters) - U.S. efforts to save Middle East peace talks from collapse showed little sign of progress on Monday amid threats from Israel to retaliate for what it saw as unilateral Palestinian moves towards statehood. The U.S.-brokered negotiations plunged into crisis last week after Israel, demanding a Palestinian commitment to continue talking after the end of the month, failed to carry out a promised release of about two dozen Palestinian prisoners. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas responded by signing 15 global treaties, including the Geneva Conventions on the conduct of war and occupations, on behalf of the State of Palestine, a defiant move that surprised Washington and angered Israel. The wrangling attracted little interest on the streets, where both Israeli and Palestinians have become inured to decades of conflict and deadlock.
