Texas lawmen sentenced for drug trafficking along Mexican border Wednesday, Apr 30, 2014 05:50 PM PDT By Jim Forsyth SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) - Nine former south Texas law officers were sentenced from between nine and 17 years in federal prison for using their badges and police vehicles to move and sell large shipments of drugs, a federal court official said on Wednesday. The nine, most of whom were from the so-called Panama Unit, made up of law officers from jurisdictions organized to investigate the flow of illegal drugs coming from Mexico, were sentenced this week on drug trafficking and other charges in U.S. District Court in the border city of McAllen. From 2010 through 2012, the nine lawmen used their positions to steal narcotics and cash from drug traffickers and provided them to other drug dealers who were paying them for protection, prosecutors said. According to court documents, four of the men loaded two marked police vehicles with 40 kilograms of cocaine and drove the drugs past a Border Patrol checkpoint on the main road between the Rio Grande Valley and San Antonio. Art world scion gets one-year prison term for illegal gambling Wednesday, Apr 30, 2014 04:45 PM PDT By Lindsay Dunsmuir NEW YORK (Reuters) - Hillel "Helly" Nahmad, a prominent New York art dealer, was sentenced on Wednesday to one year and a day in federal prison for running an illegal high-stakes gambling ring that catered to movie stars, professional athletes and bank executives. Nahmad, 35, the son of a billionaire art dealer from Europe, had pleaded guilty to operating an illegal gambling business as part of a deal in which he acknowledged he led the ring, financed it and was entitled to a substantial share of its profits. In sending him to prison, U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman rejected Nahmad's proposal to allow him to remain free and instead pay $100,000 a year to fund a program in which the convicted felon would teach underprivileged children about art. "There is only one way for Mr. Nahmad to understand his actions have consequences ... and that is to send him to prison," the judge said at the sentencing, in Manhattan federal court. Botched Oklahoma execution shakes even death penalty supporters Wednesday, Apr 30, 2014 03:18 PM PDT Before panicked medical personnel in Oklahoma's death chamber flipped down the blinds, witnesses saw a scene that one described as "incredibly difficult to watch": the condemned man groaned, struggled, lifted his head, and said, "man" and "something's wrong." Oklahoma's first test of a new lethal drug combination failed disastrously Tuesday evening. Instead of a painless death, as intended, Clayton Lockett appeared to suffer. Gov. Mary Fallin said prison officials deny that Mr. Lockett ever regained consciousness before they administered a second dose of drugs intended to painlessly stop his breathing and his heart. Second New Mexico football player arrested in student's rape Wednesday, Apr 30, 2014 11:11 AM PDT By Joseph J. Kolb ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (Reuters) - A second University of New Mexico football player has been arrested on suspicion of raping and kidnapping a fellow student earlier this month, officials said on Wednesday. SaQwan Edwards, 21, surrendered on Tuesday night shortly after a warrant was issued for his arrest on two counts of sexual assault and kidnapping, according to Lieutenant Tim Stump of the University of New Mexico Police Department. The arrest comes just over a week after another football player with the university, 20-year-old Crusoe Gongbay, was arrested on the same charges in the case. According to a criminal complaint, the two football players and the former student spotted the woman outside a house party on April 13, where the former student "put his arms around (her) and stated, "No, she is coming with us." Oklahoma botches execution, raising questions on death penalty in U.S. Wednesday, Apr 30, 2014 08:24 AM PDT By Heide Brandes OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - Oklahoma inmate Clayton Lockett died during a botched execution on Tuesday, minutes after a doctor had called a halt to the procedure, raising more questions about new death penalty cocktails used by the state and others. Thirteen minutes after a doctor administered a lethal injection at the state's death chamber in McAlester, Lockett lifted his head and started mumbling. The troubled execution was expected to have national implications, with lawyers for death row inmates having argued that new lethal injection cocktails used in Oklahoma and other states could cause undue suffering and violate constitutional protections against cruel and unusual punishment. "This could be a real turning point in the whole debate as people get disgusted by this sort of thing," said Richard Dieter, the executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, which monitors capital punishment. Tuesday Was the Worst Day for Death Penalty Advocates Since 1972 Wednesday, Apr 30, 2014 06:36 AM PDT The combination could mean that the two-decade long trend in public opinion away from the death penalty will accelerate. Almost no one — not even Oklahoma's governor, Mary Fallin — is defending what happened in the execution of Clayton Lockett, convicted of the 1999 murder of a Tulsa high school student. It followed a constitutional crisis between the governor and the state Supreme Court, which blocked the planned execution of Lockett and another man because of questions about the untested drug cocktail that would be used. British terror convict emailed as 'sacrifice72' Wednesday, Apr 30, 2014 12:39 AM PDT A British convict who plotted to blow a US passenger plane out of the sky was so determined to die for Al-Qaeda that he used the email address sacrifice72@yahoo.com. Saajid Badat, 35, told the New York trial of British hate preacher Abu Hamza on Tuesday that he used the Yahoo account while researching Jewish targets in South Africa. The word sacrifice was a nod to his determination to die in the cause of violent jihad and 72 a reference to the number of virgins that Al-Qaeda preached a "martyr" is entitled to deflower in heaven. Under cross-examination from Abu Hamza's lawyer Jeremy Schneider, he said he spent two days preparing a "detailed" report for Al-Qaeda bosses on the targets. Full Story | Top |
