| Motor racing-New engine, new rules and new sound for F1 in 2014 Thursday, Mar 06, 2014 04:01 PM PST By Alan Baldwin LONDON, March 7 (Reuters) - Formula One will look and sound different when the season starts in Melbourne on March 16, with new regulations and the introduction of a turbocharged V6 engine with energy recovery systems. The old 2.4 litre V8 engines, with kinetic energy recovery systems (KERS), that revved at up to 18,000rpm have been consigned to history and replaced by a power unit - a 1.6 litre turbocharged engine limited to 15,000rpm with two energy recovery systems (ERS). Teams are allowed five power units - each made up of six elements - per driver per season, compared to an allocation of eight engines last year. Full Story | Top |
| Motor racing-Team and driver prospects for 2014 season Thursday, Mar 06, 2014 04:01 PM PST By Alan Baldwin LONDON, March 7 (Reuters) - Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel will be chasing their fifth successive constructors' and drivers' championships in the 19 race season that starts in Australia on March 16. Prefixes denote numbers drivers will have on their cars: - - - - RED BULL 1 - Sebastian Vettel (Germany) 3 - Daniel Ricciardo (Australia) Vettel ended the 2013 season with nine wins in a row but a 10th in Melbourne already looks unlikely. Red Bull's engine partners Renault have been beset by testing issues and the champions have done far less mileage than Mercedes and Ferrari-powered rivals. Despite that, the car looks good and has plenty of potential but reliability will be key. Full Story | Top |
| Motor racing-Ricciardo ready to take the Bull by the horns Thursday, Mar 06, 2014 04:01 PM PST By Alan Baldwin LONDON, March 7 (Reuters) - Daniel Ricciardo will have the number three on his car when he makes his Red Bull race debut as world champion Sebastian Vettel's new team mate at his home Australian Grand Prix on March 16. It was also the number the late 'Intimidator' Dale Earnhardt, a boyhood hero, used for most of his career as NASCAR's 'Man in Black' on his way to seven Winston Cup championships. No Formula One driver wants to be labelled a 'Number Two', even if it is a tag the 24-year-old Australian already faces as he takes the hottest seat in Formula One as partner to a four times champion only two years older than him. Mark Webber, Vettel's Australian team mate until the end of last season, had to race with the two on his car for years because the numbers were allocated according to the constructors' championship. | Motor racing-Magnussen and Kvyat join the F1 fast track Thursday, Mar 06, 2014 04:01 PM PST By Alan Baldwin LONDON, March 7 (Reuters) - Formula One fans may look back on 2014 as a special year not only for the biggest technical shakeup in decades but also for the debuts of two young drivers following in the footsteps of champions. Danish hotshot Kevin Magnussen and Russian teenager Daniil Kvyat will be starting out on what could be a road to glory when they line up for the first time on the grand prix grid in Melbourne on March 16. Magnussen, 21, is McLaren's first rookie since Lewis Hamilton made his debut in 2007 and comparisons have already been made between the two with the team describing him as "pretty special" and "lightning quick". Kvyat, still only 19, joins Toro Rosso as the latest on a Red Bull production line that has produced four-times champion Sebastian Vettel and the German's new Australian team mate Daniel Ricciardo. | Motor racing-Fire and ice pairing will keep Ferrari busy Thursday, Mar 06, 2014 04:01 PM PST By Alan Baldwin LONDON, March 7 (Reuters) - Ferrari's fire and ice pairing of Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen has, in the words of president Luca di Montezemolo, put two roosters in the same henhouse. While Alonso is the incumbent, starting his fifth year at Maranello, the returning Raikkonen remains Ferrari's most recent world champion and that still counts for plenty as far as the passionate tifosi are concerned. Both were winners last season, Raikkonen for Lotus in the Australian season-opener just as he was in his 2007 championship year with Ferrari, and both have shown they are tough nuts to crack mentally. "We have respect for each other and obviously we both try to come out on top." Spaniard Alonso, now 32 and world champion with Renault in 2005 and 2006, is a circuit samurai - his fighting philosophy encapsulated in the swordsman tattooed on his back - while the glacial Raikkonen has 'Iceman' inscribed on his forearm. | Play resumes at Doral after two-hour weather delay Thursday, Mar 06, 2014 02:41 PM PST DORAL, Florida (Reuters) - First round action at the WGC-Cadillac Championship resumed on Thursday after dangerous weather had halted play for over two hours. Violent thunderstorms and a tornado watch forced organizers to blow the horn and clear the Blue Monster Course with American Jason Dufner sitting atop the leaderboard at five under through 10 holes. Russell Henley, fresh off Sunday's Honda Classic triumph, continued his good form and is sitting one shot back at four under after 10 holes. ... Full Story | Top |
