Soccer-Real misfit Isco could get starring role against Schalke
Sunday, Mar 16, 2014 07:00 PM PDT
By Tim Hanlon BARCELONA, March 17 (Reuters) - Real Madrid, who have all but sealed a place in the Champions League quarter-finals after their 6-1 first-leg away victory over Schalke, could hand Isco another opportunity to prove his worth in the return on Tuesday. The playmaker has not been able to hold down a regular place in Carlo Ancelotti's side since his big-money move from Malaga. Isco was one of the hottest properties on the market at the end of last season after a starring role for Malaga as they progressed to the last eight of the Champions League. Since then, however, it has not gone according to plan for Isco who has not been able to find a role in Real's expensively assembled squad.

Soccer-Drogba apprehensive about Stamford Bridge return
Sunday, Mar 16, 2014 07:00 PM PDT
By Tony Jimenez LONDON, March 17 (Reuters) - Former Chelsea great Didier Drogba does not know how he will react when he returns to Stamford Bridge with his Galatasaray team on Tuesday for their Champions League last-16 second leg, the Ivorian striker said. Drogba won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups and, most memorably, the 2012 Champions League when his penalty in the shootout clinched victory for the Londoners against Bayern Munich in the final at the Allianz Arena.

Soccer-United clutch at last straw, Chelsea welcome Drogba
Sunday, Mar 16, 2014 07:00 PM PDT
By Martyn Herman LONDON, March 17 (Reuters) - Manchester United will be clutching at the final straw of a sobering season when they attempt to overturn a 2-0 deficit against Greek side Olympiakos and reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Wednesday. The final four places in the quarter-finals are up for grabs this week, although unlike United who remain hopeful of salvation, Zenit St Petersburg and Schalke travel to Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid respectively facing mission impossible. Premier League Chelsea still have plenty of work to do, however, as they welcome back former striker Didier Drogba to Stamford Bridge hoping the Ivorian does not help Galatasaray continue the English exodus from the competition after last 16 defeats for Arsenal and Manchester City.

Cricket-Trott's 'con' disrespectful of real illness - Vaughan
Sunday, Mar 16, 2014 06:46 PM PDT
Jonathan Trott's assertion that mental and physical fatigue had forced him home from England's Ashes tour of Australia rather than depression felt like a "con" and would only convince his team mates he had abandoned them, according to former England captain Michael Vaughan. Team officials cited a long-standing "stress-related illness" as the cause. "I feel a little bit conned we were told Jonathan Trott's problems in Australia were a stress-related illness he had suffered for years," Vaughan wrote in his column in Monday's Daily Telegraph newspaper. "He was obviously not in a great place but he was struggling for cricketing reasons and not mental, and there is a massive difference." Vaughan added that depression was a debilitating illness and for Trott to use terms like "crazy" or "nutcase" in his interview only disrespected those who suffered from it.

Pennetta beats injured Radwanska in Indian Wells final
Sunday, Mar 16, 2014 04:08 PM PDT
Tennis: BNP Paribas Open-Pennetta v Radwanska(Reuters) - Italy's Flavia Pennetta captured the biggest title of her career on Sunday when she beat Poland's ailing Agnieszka Radwanska in the final of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. As Radwanska struggled with a knee injury, Pennetta cruised to a 6-2 6-1 victory in less than an hour and a quarter in the Californian desert. Better known as a doubles player, Pennetta had contemplated retiring last year after tumbling down the world rankings, but the veteran Italian has rediscovered the fountain of youth. "After so many years of working hard, this is the best moment." Radwanska went into the match as a slight favorite but was unable to play near her best because of a knee injury that severely restricted her movement.
