Rugby-Capless Perenara eager to get back into All Blacks fold
Monday, Mar 10, 2014 08:44 PM PDT
By Greg Stutchbury WELLINGTON, March 11 (Reuters) - Wellington Hurricanes scrumhalf TJ Perenara is itching to get back into the All Blacks environment after spending much of the latter part of 2013 on the bench recuperating from injury or holding tackle bags at practice. "Mate, it was probably the biggest learning curve of my career," Perenara told Reuters of his inclusion in the All Blacks squad last year and for their end of season tour. "It was just a massive learning curve." The 22-year-old's eagerness to get back into Steve Hansen's squad, and hopefully win the much-coveted All Blacks cap, cannot be underestimated. Perenara has long been tipped for higher honours after making the Wellington provincial side while still at school and in early 2012 he was on the radar of the selectors as they revamped the All Blacks squad looking to the 2015 World Cup.

Rock group Kiss tackles tricky spectacle of indoor football
Monday, Mar 10, 2014 07:01 PM PDT
Musician Gene Simmons of rock band KISS bites a football after a news conference to announce his part-ownership of Arena Football League team, the Los Angeles Kiss, in AnaheimBy Eric Kelsey ANAHEIM, California (Reuters) - Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of the rock band Kiss put down their instruments, wiped away the face paint and unveiled their own arena football franchise on Monday, promising to pair the niche sport with the pyrotechnic theater of their concerts. Seated outside the Honda Center arena in Anaheim, California, the two sixty-somethings stayed true to their trademark self assurance and bravado in their plan to turn an indoor version of American football played on a smaller field with a heavy emphasis on high scores into a top entertainment draw in Southern California. We set our own trail," Stanley told media assembled outside the arena, which is home to hockey's Anaheim Ducks and only a few miles down the road from Walt Disney Co's Disneyland theme park. They aim to go where others have failed in a place with no shortage of entertainment and recreation alternatives.

Monday, Mar 10, 2014 07:00 PM PDT
By Iain Rogers MADRID, March 11 (Reuters) - Sergio Aguero has a proven scoring record against Barcelona and the Manchester City forward may have a crucial role to play if his side are to upset the odds and reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time. City trail 2-0 ahead of Wednesday's last 16, second leg at the Nou Camp, a Lionel Messi penalty and a late Daniel Alves goal in Manchester last month putting the Spanish champions on the brink of their seventh consecutive appearance in the last eight of Europe's elite club competition. Aguero, who missed the first leg through injury but returned for City's English Capital One (League) Cup final victory on March 2, scored five goals in 10 La Liga games against Barca for Atletico Madrid between 2006 and 2011.

Monday, Mar 10, 2014 07:00 PM PDT
By Julien Pretot PARIS, March 11 (Reuters) - Bayer Leverkusen will resist the option of fielding a second-string team despite taking an almost insurmountable 4-0 deficit to Paris St Germain on Wednesday for their Champions League last-16 second leg. "We cannot just throw this game away because otherwise we can go ahead and send the Under-23 team," Leverkusen coach Sami Hyypia told reporters. "I am really looking forward to the game and every player should feel the same." The former Liverpool defender's team have been struggling since the winter break, a German Cup exit to second division Kaiserslautern last month followed by three straight Bundesliga defeats. Leverkusen are without midfielder Jens Hegeler who tore ankle ligaments in the 1-1 draw against Hanover 96 on Saturday and is out for the rest of the season.

Monday, Mar 10, 2014 03:58 PM PDT
Obama departs after remarks welcoming NCAA champion athletes to the South Lawn of the White House in WashingtonBy Will Dunham WASHINGTON (Reuters) - There were plenty of college athletes at the White House on Monday, but none of the usual NFL or NBA-bound football and basketball players. Instead, President Barack Obama recognized the achievements of college athletes not in the big-money pursuits of football and basketball, but in a range of other sports like riflery, field hockey, water polo, tennis, track and field, soccer, lacrosse and hockey. "It is nice to be outside for a change, and spring break is underway for a lot of schools, so we thought this was the perfect time to invite a bunch of college kids over to wreak havoc on the White House," said Obama, just a week after a snowstorm paralyzed the U.S. capital. Three schools had two national championship teams present: Princeton University (fencing and field hockey);
