Gox, once the world's biggest bitcoin exchange, filed for bankruptcy protection in Japan on Friday, saying it may have lost nearly half a billion dollars worth of the virtual currency due to hacking into its faulty computer system.

Gox, other bitcoin exchanges, and businesses that deal in bitcoin to seek information on how they handled recent cyber attacks, a source familiar with the probe said on Wednesday. At least three exchanges were forced to halt withdrawals of bitcoins on February 7, including Mt. Gox, which was the largest at the time. Mt. Gox never resumed service before going dormant on Tuesday, leaving customers unable to recover their funds. "As there is a lot of speculation regarding Mt Gox and its future, I would like to use this opportunity to reassure everyone that I am still in Japan, and working very hard with the support of different parties to find a solution to our recent issues," Karpeles said in a statement posted on the Mt. Gox website.

Michigan man sentenced for three-day shooting spree on interstate

(Reuters) - A Michigan man was sentenced to 18 to 40 years in prison for a three-day firing spree in 2012 on an interstate highway that earned him the nickname the "I-96 shooter," prosecutors said on Monday. A Livingston County jury on January 29 found Raulie Casteel, 44, guilty of terrorism, assault with a dangerous weapon, firing a weapon from a vehicle and other felony weapons charges. A resident of Wixom, Michigan, northwest of Detroit, Casteel was convicted of shooting at 23 vehicles in a four-county area in southeastern Michigan, mostly on or near Interstate 96 from October 16 to 18, 2012. Schools changed bus routes, commuters took back roads to and from work, and sports fans feared traveling to college sporting events because of the Casteel's shooting spree, Attorney General Bill Schuette said in a statement.

Adam Albani was was shot dead with his wife and son on February 1 in the northern city of Zaria, as he drove home from teaching a theology class, immediately raising suspicions that the militants were behind the killing. The Department of State Services (DSS) said seven people, including the alleged mastermind of the attack and one of the gunmen, were detained between February 13 and February 21. "Investigation and confessions by suspects revealed that Albani's pro-Western posture and his preaching are contrary to the Boko Haram ideology," DSS spokeswoman Marilyn Ogar said in an emailed statement.

Yeung, who had denied the charges of laundering $93 million between January 2001 and December 2007, will be sentenced on Friday. A former hair stylist to Hong Kong's rich and famous, Yeung had told the court he amassed his wealth through hairdressing, share trading, property purchases, gambling in the world's casino hub of Macau and other investments. Prosecutors had pointed to what they said were suspicious cheque payments made to Yeung by employees of Macau companies, including a junket operator, which earns commissions from casinos to attract cash-rich gamblers.

Pistorius pleads not guilty as witness describes 'screams'

South African Paralympian star Oscar Pistorius pleaded not guilty Monday to murdering his girlfriend as his trial opened with a neighbour's account of "bloodcurdling" screams before shots rang out on the night of the killing. Pistorius, whose trial is being broadcast live around the world, faces a life sentence if convicted of the fatal Valentine's Day shooting of model and reality television star Reeva Steenkamp a year ago. After a state prosecutor charged that Pistorius "unlawfully and intentionally did kill" Steenkamp, he entered a plea of "not guilty, my lady". Pistorius, 27, a double amputee sporting hero known as the "Blade Runner" for his carbon-fibre running blades, also pleaded not guilty to three unrelated gun charges.

The verdict comes at a time when several activists have expressed fears that the autocratic rule and widespread police abuse prevalent under Mubarak were returning. The two policemen were sentenced following a retrial for the manslaughter and torture of Khaled Said in June 2010, after they had unlawfully arrested him at an Internet cafe in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria. Mahmoud Salah Mahmoud and Awad Ismail Suleiman had initially been sentenced to seven years in October 2011 for excessive brutality.
