Winter storm lashes eastern U.S., threatens Thanksgiving travel
Tuesday, Nov 26, 2013 03:36 PM PST
Travelers walk through Penn Station in New YorkBy Ian Simpson WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A powerful storm dumped heavy rain and snow over much of the eastern United States on Tuesday, threatening to snarl travel plans for millions of people over the busy Thanksgiving holiday, forecasters said. The Atlantic coast into New England will be drenched with 2 to 4 inches of rain by late Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, as the storm moves northeast out of the South, said the National Weather Service. The windswept rain will pound the Atlantic corridor from Richmond, Virginia, as far north as Portland, Maine, likely causing poor visibility, flight delays and urban flooding, said online forecasters Accuweather.com. The Thanksgiving holiday is one of the nation's busiest travel times.

Green economy expert Antwi Akom to speak at First Friday
Tuesday, Nov 26, 2013 03:05 PM PST
Dr. Antwi Akom will speak at the Mill Valley Public Library on Friday, December 6th.Mill Valley, Calif.—"Climate change" is often a buzzword in political debates, but it was one that went unuttered during the most recent presidential debates in 2012, quietly speaking volumes about the importance (or lack thereof) of the issue to policymakers. While the science behind climate change is clear, what will it take for the issue to become a greater priority? On December 6th, Dr. ...

Turkey Is Off the Table for Al Gore's Thanksgiving
Tuesday, Nov 26, 2013 02:36 PM PST
The subject of meat has, until recently, been an uncomfortable one for Al Gore. Since the former vice president and presidential candidate turned his attention from politics to climate change, he's been dogged by charges that his own diet, which included meat, was part of the problem. Everyone from PETA to Glenn Beck has highlighted Gore's omnivore status, noting that meat production, which emits more greenhouse gases than the transportation sector, is a significant culprit in the climate crisis. While Gore demurred on the topic for years, news came out this week that he, like Bill Clinton, is now a vegan.

Greenland Ice Sheet Was Smallest When Ocean Was Warm
Tuesday, Nov 26, 2013 12:35 PM PST
Greenland Ice Sheet Was Smallest When Ocean Was WarmIn the last 10,000 years, the Greenland Ice Sheet shrank to its smallest size around 3,000 to 5,000 years ago, when ocean temperatures were also quite high, a new study suggests. Understanding the reaction ice sheets like the ones covering Greenland and Antarctica will have to climate change is important because the melting ice could contribute significantly to rising sea levels. "We're particularly concerned about what the ice sheets are going to do, because when they melt, sea levels rise," said study co-author Jason Briner, a geologist at the University at Buffalo. One way to make predictions about the current warming period is to see how warming trends in the past affected the ice sheet, and the rivers of ice called glaciers that make them up.

What's Causing the Epic Thanksgiving Storm
Tuesday, Nov 26, 2013 10:43 AM PST
What's Causing the Epic Thanksgiving StormA messy winter storm is moving across the eastern half of the United States, threatening to delay drivers and fliers right before Thanksgiving Day, one of the busiest travel times of the year. Weather forecasters say a few key atmospheric components joined forces to create this meteorological misery. The storm is actually the same upper level low-pressure system, or trough (essentially a dip in the jet stream), that tore over the Southwest over the last few days, Brian Hurley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service said. "It's just now getting to the point where once it gets to the Gulf region, it has more moisture to work with," Hurley told LiveScience Tuesday morning (Nov. 26).

US Methane Levels Higher Than Thought
Tuesday, Nov 26, 2013 09:06 AM PST
US Methane Levels Higher Than ThoughtFor the study, published Monday (Nov. 25) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers from universities and government labs fanned out across the United States in 2007 and 2008 and measured levels of methane gas in the air. Though methane breaks down in the atmosphere after only 10 years, faster than carbon dioxide, it's about 30 times more effective than carbon dioxide at trapping heat escaping the Earth — the greenhouse effect that leads to global warming. Total methane emissions in the United States were 1.5 to 1.7 times higher than amounts previously estimated by the Environmental Protection Agency and by the International Emissions Database for Global Atmospheric Research (EDGAR), respectively, the study found. The difference between the estimates comes from ways the various groups calculate methane emissions, the researchers said in a statement.

Pacific islander fails in bid to be first climate refugee
Monday, Nov 25, 2013 11:23 PM PST
Tarawa atoll, capital of the vast archipelago nation of Kiribati which is under threat from climate change, pictured from above in September 2001A Pacific islander whose homeland is threatened by rising seas failed in an attempt to become the world's first climate change refugee Tuesday, with a New Zealand judge dismissing his case as "novel" but "unconvincing". Lawyers for Ioane Teitiota, 37, argued that New Zealand should not deport him even though his visa had expired, because climate change was gradually destroying his low-lying home in Kiribati. In a written ruling handed down on Tuesday, High Court judge John Priestley acknowledged that Kiribati was suffering environmental degradation attributable to climate change, including storm surges, flooding and water contamination. Priestley said the UN Refugee Convention stated that a refugee must fear persecution if they returned home, a criteria Teitiota did not meet.

Climate change will cause 'serious economic losses' in Pacific
Monday, Nov 25, 2013 09:01 PM PST
The resort region of Muri on the Eastern side of the Island of Rarotonga, the largest island in the Cook Islands is viewed from the air on August 30, 2012The Pacific region faces serious economic losses due to climate change and it is critical that nations causing the problem step in to help, the Asian Development Bank said Tuesday. A new report by the bank released in Sydney, "Economics of Climate Change in the Pacific", showed that losses would range between 2.9 percent and 15.2 percent of annual gross domestic product by 2100. The Pacific contains some of the smallest nations on Earth and there are growing fears that global warming and rising seas threaten their very existence, with some of them atolls barely a metre (three feet) above sea level. The report assessed the potential impacts of climate change on agriculture, fisheries, tourism, coral reefs, and human health, with the ADB's Pacific director general Xianbin Yao warning of dire consequences.
